The route from the ferries along Market street ~the principal street of the city—to Valen street is now also in opera- tion. The Kentucky street line, from Twen d street to Sixteenth ave- nue, the Rallroad avenue line, from Sixteenth avenue to the terminus &t the Six Mile House, are also in op- eration. In addition to this, the Ilines on O'Farreli, Ellis, Turk and Eddy streets, east of Flllmore street to the intersection with Market street, are ready for operation, awalting the re- moval of wal “By the above outll tablished practically all parts of the unburned portion of the city are now served, and transportation for passen- gers from the unburned to and through the burned portions of the city is being eet to the I Hasy furnighed, particularly to the ferry ter- | minals at the foot of Market street. *“Under & temporary permit by Mayor Schmitz, a trolley service, replacing | articles 7 | fa of routes es-| Brechemin's Praiseworthy &ork |} in Behalf of the Relief fospitals i Immediate Supply of the Medioétl:L | Needs Due breel.\ and I‘Iayor Approve, ‘When earthquake and fire dutmyad' e e Mission street headquarters and the 0 worth of stores of the Army ical Supply Department, the officer rge, Colonel Louis Brechemin, was aptly confronted by the seemingly able diffioulty of immediate- iring drugs and dressings and ing else requisite to satisfy the gmented demands of the os- ensaries and hospitals as well as those from the emergency insii- that sprang up so numerously nobly throughout the entire shaken on. How he accomplisted the task ne of the individual exploits that live among the marvels of a mar- period, w on the local drug stores,’’ $4 he labored sssiduously to open telegraphic communisation with Pacific coast points on which he, with tbe government to back him, could draw. And ere that fateful April 18th expired he had toms of drugs en route from many California and Oregon towns to this city, while from the great army ly ots in the Enst were started directed to him as fast as they e loaded. The wonderful result s initistive—ecquired by twenty- years of experience in combatting i such apparent impossibilities—was that no maimed or injured victim of the strophe suffered for lack of proper ntended to elleviate pain. Those Try ut those first few Jays were try- ing days for all conneeted with this de- partment,’’ said Colonel Brechemin as he ealmly smoked an =after-luncheun cigar yesterday and watched his well- ordered retinue st work. ‘‘The stuff arrived in quantiiy sufficient to meet ore than the current demand t our »s for receiving and distribut- ing it were primitive, to say the very least, and chaos reigaed, of course. Weo did not even have tentage in which to store the comstanily coming goods, nor d we have the time or the means to meet great volume of re ons in & perfectly systematic w: My regu- y trained force was ina. ta to dle all the business, an was obliged to emplo; smparative es in almost eve: it my main effort was to avert a famine in any article for medical or gical use, and just as soon that ger was removed the work of pe ing organization and pment This 18 the re: It Las omplishe:: since Ap: s is & canvas town situated east Presidio General Hospi most conspicuous structure is a spacious at bears all the external marks cus ‘big top,” which indeed it was when Brigadier-General Funston ired it from its owner, E. J. Arnold and placed it at service. Now its gaudi iped walls enclose, instead of the sawdust arenss, many hundreds of tons of medical and surgical supplies, its presiding genius is Dr. ‘Jack’ Wilson Shiels, viee-president of the Bo- hemian Club, who sits at the head of a long table and passes upon the requi- sitions that pour im from all the city hospitals and dispensaries and scores of similar institutions outside the eity. He lost his office and all its effects and sustained a crippled hand during the blaze, and Colonel Brechemin guiekly appointed him chief issuance officer of the department. With an srmy of clerks and laborers at his command the popular young clubman seems to be as :ldly re-established on parts of the ca- ble system of the company. POWER HOUSE IS SAVED. *“By heroic efforts of the fire depart- ment and the men of the United Rail- roads, the company’s power house at Bryant street was saved, and the com- pany is now supplying all of its own power. Work has been hastened on the company’s big power station at North Beach, and steam is now in the boilers at that station. “Just after the fire started the United Railroads Company was placed at the disposal of the Mayor, and, upon his request, the Mission district was immediately patrolled by the com- pauy’s uniformed men, in perfectly or- ganized squads, for police work. The company has continued to do every- thing possible to aid the city, “Regarding street railway service for San Francisco, the officials of the United Raflroads say that, if they ave afforded the necessary privileges, the fire will result in the complete estab- lishment of a car service and equip- ment unsurpassed by that of any other city in the world. “THORNWELL MULLALLY, “Cheirman Transportation Commit~ tee.” “I hereby certify that the forsgoing statement is correct In every detail, and that the ¢ service of the United Railroads is steadily improving. “E. E. SCHMITZ, Mayor. “May 6, 1908." “Not only are the foregoing state- ments corréct as shown by the report of one of my staff officers, but there have been very material extensions of the working system to this date, The condition of the electric railways has proven to be less serious than was re- |ported to me originally. The reports |are that the extension of the system | are proceeding with great rapidity. “A. W. To inspect the contents of the issu- ance tent is to sce everything contained in a first class drug store, only in much greater quantity, besides all kinds ofq hospital furniture and appliances, even down to dorrmats and up to fly screens, Among the many voluntary contribu- tions in store—and likely to remain there indefinitely—are patent medicines of nearly every known kind. Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup hobmnobs with Pale Pellets for Pink People, and 0Old Mother Jones’ Catnip Tea rubs el- bows with Dr. Rooem’s Cure for Alco- holism. Thedrugs mostly handled are |those specified in ‘‘The Usited States Standard Supply Table,’’ & rather vol- uminous list that is warranted to meet every possible emergency. “+It is easy running now,’’ said Dr. Shiels, ‘‘but a week or so ago it was difficult to distinguish heads from taile. We were very liberal in meeting requi- sitions until we discovered that the sit- uation was being taken advantage of by persons who were not so scrupulous es they might have been. Then we put on the screws, and now I can safely say that nothing leaves here to which the applicant is not justly entitled. Where- in did the lack of scruple consisty Oh, chiefly in the matter of obtaining spir- ituous liquor, For instance, a long list of supplies would be tendered, and in | our haste we might just glance at the signature and attach our ‘O.K.,’ to find | out afterwatd that incomspicuously in-| cluded in the list—buried somewhere in the middle—was the line ‘One quart 1 whisky.” Now every item is read by me before my O.K. is signed, and more whisky is scratched out than sent out. | But that is not saying that whisky is | refused when it is absolutely neceded.’’ | In sddition to the ‘‘big top’’ there } is a smaller circus tent in which the sup-' | plies are stored when received, and then | there are numerous office tents and liv- |ing tents for the force of 150 men., When the large tent arrived a strong | northwesterly gale was blowing, and all | | efforts of the amateur canvasmen to| erect the structure proved unavailing until one Lou Cullins, erstwhile canvas boss with ome of the many greatest shows on earth, tendered his service and hoisted the great fabric in no time. | | At his suggestion a canvas erew of four | men, including the foreman, W. B.| | Snow, are constantly on the ground,) and to their circus training is due much of the neatness displayed in the make- | Some of the Workers. | The issuance tent is open from 6 a. m. | till midnight, and Dr. George L. Painter | | alternates with Dr. Shiels in its super- sion. Jn the receiving tent Arthur M. Thompson has charge, with Herbert | Younger as his first assistant. Three | regular army doetors—Lieutenants Con- |nor, Hathaway and Powell—are also | attached to the department. The com- | missary is conducted by Dr. R. A. Day, who was also shaken and burned out u} practice, and & surprising aptitude for stewardship he has shown. O, M. Wal- | lenberg, who for fourfeen years was the | buyer for Lengfeld’s pharmacies, is in | the purchasing agent. | ‘No, we didn’t ‘loot’ sny of the | local drug stores,’’ said Colonel Brach- | emin in response to a direct query, ““but there no telling what might have been done in that direction if my appeals for supplies had been slower |in finding response from the surround- |ing towns. The only ‘loot’ received here was a stock of wines and ligquors taken from one of the big groceries by the soldiers. The goods would have been destroyed if the officer had not thought that we might find them use- | ful, 8o he dispatched them to us. Yes, they helped wus through the earlier struggle te meet demands for stimu- lants.’” ‘Where Supplies Go. PROESSIONAL MW~ RENDERED HELPLESS BY THE CATASTROPHE Dr. F. B. Baton of this city, whose family sought shelter at Independence, Or,, estimated today that 1000 physi clans and 700 dentists were rendered absolutely helpless by the great fire, and he believed that many of them were in aetual need. Most of the physicians were out on emergeney work the first day and lost their in- struments, lbraries, records and fur- niture. The more costly mechanical appliances of the dentists were 80 ge- curely fastened to the walls and floors that they could not be moved before the flames destroyed them. The greatest loss, however, lles in the widespread scattering of patients. Thousands of persons who were unm- der medical and dental treatinent have gone out of the State, and tens of thousands cannot be traced for months. Grief Dethrones Her Reason. OAKLAND, May. 8.—~Grlef over the loss of a son, supposed to have per- ished in San Francisco, has driven Mrs. Anna Kelly of that city insane. She had been a patient at the Provi- dence Hospital, but lost her reason. She was committed to the State Hos- pital.at Stockton. R o S EAST HAMPTON, Conn., May 8.— A slight earthquake shock, lasting pos- sibly a second, was felt here to-day. No damage was done, nor was any one frightened. A Mmilar phenomenon occurred here just a year ago. The earth tremors are attributed to small landslides on the ridge of which Mount Tom in Massachusetts is the highest point.
