Inhabitants of Two Towns Forced t0 Flee. Big Gale and Tor- rential Rains - Follow. i NAPLES, April 28 —Another disdster has occurred in the Vesuvius region. Throughout last night torrents of rain fell, accompanied by a heavy gale of wind, causing large avalanches of mud, ‘;sa.nd and ashes to fall over Somma and Santa Anastasia, destroying bridges, blocking the roads, flooding many hab- itations, interrupting communication i telegraph and carrying away por- ins of the rallway. | “Troops and military wagons were hurriedly dispatched to the assistance of the sufferers. ‘The inhabitants of the stricken places mentioned were awakened by a roar- ing, rushing sound, which was abso- lutely new to them, and, running out of their houses, they found their prop- erty threatened by the fall of ava- lanches of sand, ashes, etc. Their ter- ror was extreme. The women and chil- dren fled, screaming with fright into the open country, but in spite of the aval: es, floods and gales no loss cf life nad been reported up to the time this dispatch was filed. It i3 belleved that while the storms rage Vesuvius is liable to be a continual menace to lifs and property and“that the entire region of the volcano may have visitations of more or less serious nature than last night’s avalanche. ——————— MANY PERMITS ARE ISSUED FOR RESUMPTION OF WORK - Various Tradespeople Are Ready to Again Take Up the Thread of Business.
