The cast in- cluded Lilli Lehmann as Sulamith, the Fraulein Marianne Brandt; Solomen, Herr Robinson; Assad, Herr Stritt; Herr Alexi, high priest, and the opera was conducted by Anton Seidl. 5 Of the production W. J. Henderson says that "it-was the most successful opera in the repertoire of the house that season (1885-1856), “being present- ed fifteen times, and always to large audiences.” It was presented during both of the following seasons and always attracted faverable attention. This season, with a prima donna soprano who made heér debut upon the stage in the role of Sulamith, Mme. Marie Rappold, the opera again achieved notable success in New York, The opera was Goldmark’s first im- portant work, though-he had already aehleved some fame wml the familiar overtire to “Sakuntala,” § highly pie- turesque and charagteristic composition.
