Paymaster .. 01 —|Ton Gold Mt. 00 003 |SHEA WILL RECEIVE | A PRINCELY SALARY Employment of Assistants by pervising Architect Will Cut Fees in Half. - William D. Shea, who was appointed | general supervising architect for the | construction of all public buildings by the Board of Works, stated yesterday that the published estimates of the amount of compensation which he is to receive are too high. Shea figures that the cost of the buildings, the con- struction of which he will supervise under the ordinance of the Board of Supervisors, will aggregate In round numbers the sum of $5,581,000, on which he will receive 2 per cent as fees, or $111,620. Shea says that he will not re- celve the entire.amount, however, as he must employ a number of sanitary, ventilating and structural engineers, which will reduce his personal compen- sation to about one-half of the sum named. Even at that Shea will be in receipt of more than $55,000, but he says that the building of all the struc- | tures under the bond issue will con- sum+ a period of at least five years, so his yearly compensation will be some- thing like $11,000. There is some doubt as to whether the supervising architect will have any Jjurisdiction over the new building for the public library, which will cost $1,000,000. While the charter says that the Board of Works shall have super- vision over the construction of all pub- lic buildings, another section provides that the Library Trustees shall have the power to erect and equip the library buildings. As the section says, how- ever, ,that such power Is to be enjoyed with the approval of the Beard of Su- pervisors expressed by ordinance, Shea is of the opinion that he will exercise supervision over the building of the li- | brary under the general ordinance cre- ating his position. The new school buildings will cost $2,940,000, the City and County Hospital $1,000,000, the new jail $526,000, and the additions to the Hall of Justice $115,000. The construc- tion of the Monroe School to cost $59,000, the Laguna Honda to cost $54,000, and the Washington Schooi to cost $113.000, will be commenced short- 1y, as the contracts for the same have been awarded. Shea will therefore be- gin the enjoyment of his 2 per cent fee at once, figuring 34640 on the three buildings named. b —_——————— HOLLY PARK IMPROVEMENT CLUB SEEKS CAR SERVICE Calls Meeting to Comsider Matter and Many Property Owners Conmsent to Change of Grade. The Supervisors’ street committee ysterday heard the protest of the West of Castro Club against the granting of permits to Gray Brothers and to the Blue Rock Company for blasting in blocks 222, 237, 238, 239, 240 and 241 of Horner's Addition in the vicinity of Twenty-sixth and Douglass streets. L. F. Hackett of the club named stated | that for ten years the property owners had werked to have the rock crushing ard blasting stopped in the distriet. The Eureka Valley Improvement As- sociation favored the granting of the permit, but .a large number of indi- vidual property owners vigorously op- posed the resumption of blasting in therr neighborhood. The committee ordered the building of the rortherly portion of the East Potrero sewer, to cost $30,000, and the main intercepting sewer for the North Beach district for $55,000. John R.
