LOS ANGELES, March 16.—George M. Turner, formerly assistant cashier of the Union Bank of Savings, has confessed to President Bartlett of the German-Ameri- can Savings Bank that he embezzled $10,000 or more of the funds of the Union Bank before it was merged with the Ger- man-American Savings Bank two months ago. Turner is the son of wealthy parents and stood high socially. He was married not long ago to a prominent young society Woman and was prominent in church work, having been a member of the offi- cial board of the University Methodist Church and president of the Epworth League. When the irregularities in Turner's ac- counts first were discovered, he stated that they were due to errors in bookkeep- ing. He claimed to have made a search extending over several months in an ef- fort to discover where the mistake oc- curred. He resigned his position with the bank, under pressure, and since then has declared all would be explained satisfac- torily. Turner’s father made good the shortage to the bank. Within the last few days Turner has severed his connec- tion with the church and Epworth League by request. The troubles of Turner are attributed to the pace he traveled during his recent courtship days, when he expended money lavishly in auto rental, in the purchase of flowers and otherwise. There will be no prosecution. SUSPECTED ROBBER ADMITS HIS GUILT Arrest of Visalia Man and His Confession Create Sensation. VISALIA, March 16.—A sensation was sprung by the prosecution this afternoon at the trial of Thomas Stokes for rob- bery now in progress in the Superior Court. Last October a man named Owen Connelly, a sawmill hand, just down from the mountains, was knocked down in the back yard of the Visalla House and robbed of about $600. William Kinecaid, the hotel bartender, and Thomas Stokes, a hanger-on about the place, were ar- rested for the crime. Kincald was con- victed and Is pow serving an eighteen- yvear sentence in San Quentin. Stokes’ second trial is now In progress, the jury having disagreed in the first. The officers have had reason to suspect for some time past that a third person was implicated in the robbery and sus- pected a man named Mart Bennett, a well-known citizen of Visalia. No tangi- ble proof was obtained, however, until last week, when a former confident of Kincaid's told Deputy Sheriff Douglas that Kincaid had told him Bennett had helped in the hold-up and that he (Kin- cald) was not actually ‘present. ‘With this evidence the officers started after Bennett and finally located him in the mountains above Bakersfleld. Con- fronted by the evidence against him Ben- nett confessed to the entire affair. His entrance into court this afternoon and his confession implicating Stokes was a compléte surprise to the attorneys for the defense, none except the Sheriff and District Attorney being aware of his con- nection with the case. He related in de- tail the circumstances leading up to the robbery and the subsequent division of the money. He declared that Kincaid arranged the entire affair, but that Stokes and himself were the two actually engaged In the robbery, Kincaid agreeing to entertain the night watchman and keep him out of the way while the affair was in progress. ———————— PROJECTED RAILWAY WOULD CONNECT AMERICA AND ASIA Plan Under Discussion Contemplates the Building of a Tunnel Under Bering Strait. LONDON, March 16.—Newspapers here are discussing a projected railway line connecting America and Asia - by means of a tunnel under Bering Strait. A well-known Russian diplomat in Lon- don today sald that the scheme had been considered for many years, but had never been treated seriously be- cause of lack of population and com- mercial resources, the latter being lim- jted to a few Russo-American gold mines on the Russian side of the strait. He added that, though the new plan was now being discussed, he was not sanguine of its realization. RAILWAY TRAVEL.
