New York Cotton -Market. NEW YORK March 3.—There was a fur- ther gain today as a result of strong cables and an active bullish visible supply statement. The opening was at en advance of 10 to 12 points, with the greatest activity in May and July. * Within half an hour before the closing the list scored a maximym gain of 17 points, with the xreatest strength shown by the May option. Liverpool spot sales were 12,000 bales, a very heavy business for Saturday. According to the New York Cotton Exchange figures the visible supply of American cotton decreased 135,000 bales, and spinners' takings were 29,- 000’ for the week, making 6,842,000 to date. Future Grain and Provisions. CHICAGO, March 3.—Prices of wheat were on the down grade from the start to the finish of the session. Early in the day pit traders and commission houses were moderate sellers, but later the selling became large volume of business was tr: cept for covering, the market was pra without support and unable to withstand the continued and persistent short s ling by bears. It was said that large quantfties of wheat held by Eastern speculators we sold off during the day. The principal factor contributing to the weakness was favorable weather in the South- west, snow being reported from many points in tl fall-sown wheat section. A report by a Minneapolis crop expert, who estimated farm reserves in the United States on Mareh 1 at 213,000,000 bLushels, was another powerful in- fluence in stimulating bearish activity. The market closed extremely weak, with prices only slightly above the lowest point of the éay. May opened a shade to ¢ lower at S0c to 5014@80%c, declined to T3¢ and closed 1%c down at 78%e¢, The corn market close weak at about the lowest point.
