Burke in his statement says that the Board of Supervisors has the power under the charter to regulate the affairs of the streetcar companies and to compel them to furnish adequate accommod: tions for the traveling public. Burke says that unless the United Railroads shall within a reasonably short time put an extra numeber of cars on its various lines between 7 and 9 a. m. and 5 and 7 p. m. he will draft an ordinance fixing the fare of persons compelled to stand at 21; cents. Burke also holds that the Supervisors have the power to pass an ordinance to compel the putting of electric wires underground In the businessand thick- ly settled districts. Bugene D. Berri has written a letter to the City Attorney complaining of the service on the Castro-street cars and urging that steps be taken for its improvement. —_— e ————— NATIVE SONS’ PARLOR GIVES A GRAND BALL The annual ball of Pacific Parlor No. 10, Native Sons of the Golden West, in Native Sons’ Hall, last night was one of the most brilliant social functions that the parlor has ever given. Dr. Jacob Voorsanger deliv- ered an address last evening before the British-American Union, in the Acad- emy of Sclences Hall, on “The Wonder- ful Adventures of Phra, the Phoeniclan; or, The Evolution of an Englishman.’ Dr. Frederick W. dEvelyn presided and the assemblage of members of the union and their friends taxed the capa- city of the auditorium. Dr. Voorsanger, who was given a hearty greeting, took up and elaborated the subject of his discourse, at the same time pointing out how the English na- tion is a composite one. He said that the different epoch-making events ce- mented together eventuated in the cos- mopolitan character of the nation. * Among other things, Dr. Voorsanger said that there is no necessity for any undue rivalry between America and Great Britain. The idea of federation he considered a superfluity, Inasmuch as the American nation, being in fact an offshoot of the older English nation, is simply carrying forward in the world’s history the purposes, the plans and the destiny which the great Crea- tor had preconceived. —_—————— Police Commissioners Meet.
