When James Eby, United States Marine Corps, married, his income was as it now is, $1350 a month. A few. days after his marriage he was brdered to Goat Island, whither he went with his income, his wife Being refused the right to dwell with him on Government property. . Soon Mrs. Eby found that her hus- band’s entire $1350 a month was none too much for his personal needs, as he required tobacco—chewing and' smok- ing—and a few other luxuries. Several times she waited on the water front for him to come over from Goat Island and give her a few dollars for her maintenance, but as he never arrived with more than a few cents in his pos- session she declded to sue him for di- vorce. on the ground of fallure to pro- vide. She told her story to Judge Gra- ham yesterday, with the result.that she secured a decree without delay. Decrees of divorce were also granted to Fred W. from Grace Chambers for infidelity, Adele E. From . George 8. Bradshaw for desertion, Anna Belle from John Scanlon for willtul neglect and cruelty and William A. from Mary E. Granfield for intemperance. Sylvia G. has sued Patrick 8. Tillman was removed to the Harbor Emergency Hospital and then to his home, 1916 Mason street, where he expired shortly after § o'clock yesterday morning. Petersen was arrested and will prob- ably be held on a charge of man- slaughter. Tillman had been drinking during the evening, and, according to the tale | of Petersen, who was also intoxicated, the barber walked up to him and com- menced to call him vile names. Peter- sen says he resented the remarks and hit Tillman on the jaw, after which he walked away. Petersen says Tillman picked himself up and followed him along Davis street, | persisting in calling him vile names and inviting him to come back | and fight. Petersen says he walked back and again struck Tillman on the Jaw. This time the barber fell heavily to the pavement, striking his skull on the hard flags. Patrolman Mahoney of the Harbor station happened along at this juncture and took charge of both men. Till- man was rushed to the Harbor Hos- pital, but the doctors were unable to find anything serious the matter with him, His appearance indicated that he might be suffering from concussion of the brain, but as he looked all right he was sent to his home in charge of Mahoney. illman retired immediately after | telling his mother of the fight. He did | not appear to be injured, but early yes- terday morning he began to sink rapidly, complainting of terrible pains in his head. A doctor was summoned, but could do nothing for Tillman, who expired shortly after 8 o'clock in great pain. Tillman conducted a barber shop at 508 Davis street.. He was 29 years old and resided with his aged mother, two1 brothers and a sister. He was well known in political circles in Norlhf Beach and had the reputation of being | a quiet, orderly citizen. Petersen is a burly sailor and resides at 109 Broadway. He tells a straight- | | forward story of the row and the police | are inclined to belleve what he says. 1t is likely he will escape punishment, | as there 18 no evidence to show he in- tended to kill Tillma ARE IN THE TOILS W. P. Sweeney and Chester Rappold Arrested on Com- plaint of Employers. A man and a boy connected with the delivery department in Weinstock, Lubin & Co.'s store were arrested vesterday aft- ernoon by Detectives Harper and Arm- strong. They are W. P. Sweeney, who had charge of the department, and Ches- ter Rappold, ome of his assistants. Sweeney is a married man and llves at 1664 Post street, and Rappold s 18 ye of age and lives with his parents at 5 Howard street. It Is alleged that Sweeney and Rappold have been collecting money for parcels delivered and spending it on betting on horse rac The system was to mark certain accounts as not paid and keep manipulating the accounts by marking later ones as not paid and the former ones as paid. The company became sus- picious, and a checking up of the accounts led to the discovery that Sweeney and | Rappold had been appropriating various sums. Within a month they have appropriated the following sums: $37 50, 38 50, $32 50, $145, $1650, $25, $35, $2 80, $250, $20, $43, $15 50, $30, 88 cents $16 50 and $20, amount- ing altogether to $307 63. Sweeney had been employed as chief delivery eclerk for about a vear, and Rappald as assist- ant for about the same time. It is ex- pected that there may be other sums. Dunn said that he had lost about $3000 at a poker game In Goldfle.d and had glven checks on the American Express Company in New York as payment, but had stopped payment of the checks after he had left Goldfield about two weeks ago.
