Jan. 5—Owing fo & snow blockade on the Rock Island road, near Santa Rosa, N. Mex., traffic has been completely tied up on that line for & week, and beginning to-day trains were detoured over the Santa Fe tracks, and will go to Kansas City that way. The El Paso and Southwestern road, which connects with the Rock Island above Bl Paso, is completely out of coal, due to the blockade of its branch line leading to the Dawson coal flelds. As a result of its inability to get fuel, the EI Paso and Southwestern has beemn com- pelled to borrow from other roads for its trains on the western end of the line which runs to Bisbee and Douglas. Its smelter at Douglas will be tled up for lack of fuel if the blockade is not soon broken. California fruit shipments intended for the Rock Island are all detoured over otker lines. The eleven big freight liners of this steamship company have an aggregate carrying capacity of about 100,000 tonms. All of the ships are practically new, and all are of steel throughout. At the present time this company up»’ ates these ships between New York, Sa Francisco, Honolulu and back to New York, the steamships passing from the Atlantic to the Paciflc by way of the straits. The big liners all have a speed of twelve and a half knots an hour. and make the 14000 mile voyage between New York and San Franeisco In an aver- | age of sixty days. When the Tehuantepec National Rall- way and the freight liners begin to work together, however, the distance will ba cut to about 5000 miles, and the time from New York to Los Angeles will be twenty- five days, or about the length of time re- quired to ship heavy freight by rail be- tween the metropolis of the’ East and the Southwest. As the water haul will bs but little longer than the route by land the entrance of the American-Hawalian line Into the fast freight fleld will bring about a tremendous struggle between the steamship company and the transcon- tinental railroads. This contract becomes effective July 1, 19%06. J. B. Alexander, of the Spreckels Brothers Commercial Company, the local representatives of the American-Hawai- fan line, stated to-day that they hoped to begin operations over the mew route in July. —_———————— Prefers Death to Imprisonment.
