On Saturday, October 7th, The Seattle Star exclusively prapesed to the people of this city that they make a de- termined effort to secure the great International Christian Endeavor Convention in 1907 The Star pointed out the big advantages that would actrue to Seattle from securing this monster convention, and it urged the business men and citizens generally to at once get together and hustle The fact was stated that the heads of the Christian Endeavor organization were looking to the West for a mietitig place in 1907, and were considering not only Seat- the, but Los Angeles, Kansas City and Minneapolis, For three days The Star hammered away alone on the pfaposition, and succeeded in arousing general pitblic in- terest. The other daily papers kept silent “| Considerable opposition was temporarily aroused to the paojes: in certain quarters, but it soon subsided. fhe Times finally took up the matter and aided in the fig’at. Having finally secured united prise, energetic efforts to present Seattle's claims to the international authorities of the Christian Endeavor were made by a special committee of Endeavorers, which was sent Kast. This committee reported favorable progress. Since that time there has been a quiescent spell, during whith the respective claims of Seattle and Los Angeles to the convention have been quietly considered by the Eastern beard, But a few days ago, however, word reached Seattle that Las Angeles was preparing to steal a march on Seattle by agranging to secure among the merchants there without fur- ther delay a guarantee subscription of $25,000 to offer the Christian Endeavorers ag am inducement for them to favor ably consider that city This guarantee subscription, which The Star long ago backing of the enter- told the people of Seattle that they would have to raise to insure the convention, is not in the nature of an advance cath subscription, but to form a reserve fund, to be called fot, in part or in whole in case of a deficit in the conven tion receipts, for the payment of hall rents and other in- cidental expenses. This week the committee of the Seattle Christian En- deavorers having the 1907 matter in hand held a meeting and passed the following which were today handed to The Star. for publication: Whereas, The United’ Society of Christian Endeavor acknowledges the ability of the city of Seattle to entertain the 29rd international convention of their body in July, 1907, and Whereas, They have been furnished with all the nec- eseary facts, and all has been done that has been requested resolutions, ‘Call Is Issued for Subscriptions to the $25,000 Guarantee Fund Wanted te Back Up Seattle’s Application for the World’s Christian Endeavor Convention in (907---The Star Pledges $500 and Opens a Citizen’s Subscription List by the United Society to close the matter of the invitation, except the raising of a guarantee fund, which is required from all cities seeking the convention, and Whereas, This guarantee fund approximates $25,000, which is to cover the following expenses, based on the ex- periences of previous conventions: Advertising, printing, badges, halls, decorations, speakers, clerks, office rent, post- age, typewriters, music, etc., aggregating slightly in excess of $20,000; and Whereas, It is the custom of the United Society to charge a registration fee of $1 per person, to be used toward meeting the expenses, and Whereas, The local committee in charge of this con- vention will follow the example and profit by the experience of the recent Baltimore convention committee, and arrange for the sale of souvenir certificates of registration to inter- ested parties throughout the country, and by means of in- come derived from concerts, etc., amounting, together with the income from the registration fees of at least 18,000 dele- gates and persons visiting the city at the time of the con- vention, to practically $20,000; and Whereas, The guarantee required is $25,000, with an almost certain chance of meeting $20,000 of this as before mentioned, thereby requiring in actual cash not to exceed $5,000, with a probability of clearing up this latter amount should receipts exceed the preliminary estimate; therefore, be it Resolved, That all interested parties in the city be re- quested to contribute to a guarantee fund for the agrd inter- national convention of Christian Endeavor, with the under- standing that 25 per cent of their pledge shall be put in available form by September 1, 1906, if Seattle is chosen as the place of meeting for the convention, and with the understanding that the pledge is made subject to the adop- tion, as in the previous convention, of the registration fee by the United Society; and, in case this method of meeting (Continued on Page 7.) nee.
