NEW YORK, June 8. — Tuesday's upward ;r vement of prices was carried over into to- ay's market and, with some show of energy the part of prot 1° operators, - re. and quite presentative showing of * established during the course of the trading. There was nothing doing in the loa t of the merket. The market became Iy languid at the higher level, and the g gave evidence of quick exhaustion. It is L important to discover the causes for so insignificant a movement. Bt so far as pon eral causcs operated a distinctly h peful feel- the ma he: day news withetood this feeling and pr‘vp.r:lf;; mind to discount to some extent any favorable fears of the Government's monthly report of grain condition on June 1. Some effect was produced by reports of an unexprctedly args volume oF passonger. iras fic as a result of travel to the St. Louis ex- position and extended to the East. Some at tention was paid also to a published story that a plan for the settiement out of court of the Hill-Harriman dispute over the distri- bution of Northern Securities assets was under discuesion, although the story was denied. The softness of the London discount market, which yielded to below 2 per cent for opem market, discounts gave ound for an expectation that the Bank of England would reduce its mini- mum rate of discount to-morrow below 3 per cent. Thi= would tend to avert any movement of gold from New York to London, and would indicate that the supplysof capftal has reached repletion ut London as well as Paris. The Western Union’s statement of net earnings for the June quarter were studied with inter- est, although the current month's earnings are only estimated. The decline of 7 per cent In the earnings indicated, compared with the cor- responding quarter of last year, s regarded as throwing light on the relative volume of general business activity, Recoveries in a pumber of low-priced rallroad stocks which have heen under pressure recently, presumably due to covering hy shorts, made up an im- portant showing in the day’s advances. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par nited States 25 and the old 4s advanced %, and the new 45 declined % per cent on call. NEW YORK STOCK LIST. | value. were $2.335.000. Stocks— Sales. High, Low.. A report of a local statistician claimed % | that within the past month the condition of wheat had improved about 2 per cent. Oats were the strongest of the grains and showed only a slight loss. July ranged be- tween 343c and 40c and closed at 39%c. The condition of epring Wheat is placed at 90.9, against 93.7 last year, this lower condition being mainly due to cold weather. The acreage bout the same as last year, or 20,190,000 s. Hay and Feedstuffs. The millers continue to quote a firm tone to Feedstuffs, with more call for Bran. as the dairymen are now beginning to feed it. Prices stand the same. Somers & Co. quote the Hay market as fol- lows in thelr circular: ““Total receipts of Hay for the week just ended amount to 2100 tons, or 300 tons less than | for the week preceding. Although we are wel past the 1st of June. yvet very little of the ar- rivals is new crop Hay. Two or three cars of new wheat have arrived, but as yet none of them have been offered on the market. Two | or three cars daily of new Volunteer have been offered for sal although an occasional | car shows up straight and clean, yet most everything is mixed more or less with c!nvur‘ and grass. The range at present is from $7 to 38 2 ton here. “The old crop seems to hold out well, and from all reports it would seem that there is enough to carry us well past the 1st of July. The local demand i very quiet. for most cus- tomers believe that by waiting they will be able to stock up at considerably lower prices. A careful Investigation shows that the Hay crop is somewhat heavier than last year, and, we still have quite a supply of oid Hay, it is_very reasonable to believe that prices will rule at considerably below last summer’s range. We do not expect extremely low prices. but | no one seems to be prepared to go out and pay what they dM last meason. “It is somewhat of a disappointment to have to report that the Government order for | about 4000 tons, bids for which were received | on the 4th inst., may not be left in San Francisco. We have no assurance as to this, | but it is unofficlally stated that the north will be favored with this order in spite of the fact that/their prices were above ours. “‘As to our local market we have to report that the principal trade is with the retailers, and we therefore find that the strictly gilt- edge grades of Hay are selling fairly well." A cargo of new ley, Oat and Alfalfa Hay came in and received a bid of $5 75 per ton, but was met sold. per ton: Ollmlo Meal at the mill, $29 50@31: Cocoanut Cake, $22@23; Corn LTS E‘" ipaGiaced Com. 802 Soiad 50 rse Beans, I:.‘.""a e s AY—W] heh'. $10@14 50: Wheat l.lll.l Ou nl']fl Oat, 1!
