NO STRIKE AT SEATTLE. Officials Say Wires Are in Good Condition. SEATTLE, Wash., June 24—Seattle is the only city on the coast in which the telephone linemen employed by the Sun- set Company are not on strike and will not be. The linemen in this city on the conclusion of the linemen’s strike here a few months ago signed an agreement ex- tending for a year. PORTLAND, Or., June 24.—Forty-three linemen of the Pacific States Telephone | Company are on a strike in this city. The company officials say that they expect to be able to secure enough men to car- ry on the work. SAN JOSE. June 24.—The electric line- men here are out on strike. The manager | of the telephone company says that the wires are in good shape and that he has men to keep them so, BAKERSFIELD, June 24.—The linemen here il not go out, according to the statement made to-day by Manager Sta- ples of the Sunset Company. The em- ployes of the company mve no grievance and, it is sald, will not heed the call of those now on strike. SAN DIEGO, June 24 —The linemen’s strike has no effect here, because such employes in this city struck about a month ago under orders from ILos An- | geles. Thelr places were at once filled | and no inconvenience has resulted. FRESNO, June 24.—Fifty linemen are out on strike in the Fresno district, which includes the counties of Merced, Madera, Mariposa, Kings, Tulare and Fresno. No public inconvenience has thugAfar resulted from the strike. LOS ANGELES, June 24.—The linemen here have been out on strike for the past two months. The local difficulty has been partly adjusted and Manager Seeley of the Sunset Telephone Company asserts that he is well supplied with men. TACOMA, Wash., June 24.—It is said, as a result of a conference of the leading division officials of the Sunset Telephone and Telegraph Company, that an attempt | will be made to secure men and put them to work in place of the striking lnemen to-morrow. The officials in Tacoma, Port- land and Spokane will co-operate with a view of dealing with the strike situation in the Northwest. SANTA ANA, June 24.—Local linemen of the Sunset Telephone Company aré still at work here. SACRAMENZTO, June 24.—There is no change in the situation to-day. Three linemen who quit work yesterday are still out and it is claimed there are no ac- cessions to the strikers. STOCKTON, June 24—The six line- Imcn here are still out, but there are enough men without the union's jurisdic- tion to handle all revairs. We | ADVERTISEMENT 15 HI5 REWARD 2 William Denman Gets No Coin From the City Treasury. Supreme Court Upholds Ex- Superintendent of Schools. YIRS s It is only advertisement after all that William Denman, the attorney, will get for defending the Board of Education. Such is the decree of the. State's highest tribunal. The $500 that the plaintiff de- sired can now be used in instructing the | city’s youth. It is a touching story of blasted hopes. In October, 1900, Reginald H. Webster, then Superintendent of Schools, sued out a writ of mandate to compel the Board of Education to admit to its deliberations W. D. Kingsbury, who has since lost his fight. The City Attorney was requested to defend the board, but he refused the honor on the ground that the whole affair was a private dispute. It was then suggested, so it is alleged, that William Denman, son of the School Director, would be glad to undertake the task for no other remuneration than the advertisement that it .would give him. The young attorney was engaged. He won his case in March, 1801, thereby ac- quiring much glory. The next scene is a tableau, in which Denman has thrown the dignified Board of Education into a fit by presenting a bill for $1000 for his services. Some mem- bers of the board were positive that the lawyer had been engaged to do the work for nothing. He had a view just $1000 | different. When they were all through talking a compromise had been effected by which Denman was to get $500. They had reckoned without Superin- tendent Webster. He absolutely refused to draw a requisition on the Auditor for the $500, thus graphically illustrating the truth of the old adage about royal roads. While fame had been acquired, the for- tune had not and Denman brought suit to compel the School Superintendent to make the desired requisition. The Su- perior Court decided that Webster was right and the attorney appealed. Now it is all over and that $500 is still in the treasury. The Supreme Court holds that a School District has no stated or implied power to employ an attorney other than the one provided by the charter. When he re- fused the Board of Education could have requested the- Mayor to appoint a new City Attorney on the ground that the in- cumbent was not performing his duty. The opinion is written by Justice Angel- loti, with whom Justices Shaw, Van Dyke and Lorigan concur. Justice McFarland writes a dissenting opinion, in which Chief Justice Beatty and Justice Hen- | shaw concur. | —_—————— ! Must Pass Examinations.
