LSRR — {More Requests for License to Sell Perishable Products. ——— At the meeting of the State Board of Harbor Commissioners yesterday, Presi- dent Spear and Commissioner Kirkpatrick present, the long-discussed lease of the Central Basin wharf to the San Francisco Drydock Company was duly executed. Railroad and Navigation Company, to- gether with President Spear’s reply there- to, was read. Mr. Blair represented that his company had not been justly treated by the commission. He complained that rules had been made denyng to the Ore- gon Railroad and Navigation Company certain privileges which had been accord- ed to other steamship lines. The reply of the president indicated a disposition upon the part of the board to extend equal tacilities to all companies. The application of the China Commer- clal Steamship Company to be placed on the credit toll list was granted. The application of the Oceanic Steam- ship Company for occupancy of Broadway | wharf No. 1 while repairs to the Pacific street wharf were under way was read | and referred to the committee of the| whole. Consent was given by the board for as. signment to the Western Fuel Company of all the privileges granted by the com- | mission to John Rosenfeld's Sons. Four applications for license to sell per- ishable products on the wharves of the | State were granted. The bond of R. J. Welch, chief wharf- { |inger, in the sum of $10,000, the American | | Bonding Company of Maryland surety, | | was accepted and filed. The China Commercial, the Pollard, the Dollar and the Charles Nelson steamship . | companies were assigned to berths at | | Steuart street wharf. The construction of the new Clay street slip renders it incumbent on the commis- sion to provide one of the Stockton lines of steamers and island boats of the| United States Government with berths other than those hitherto occupied. The island boats, according to the report of the chief wharfinger, can be accommo- | dated at Washington street wharf. The | facilities afforded at this wharf are alto- gether acceptable to the Stockton Com- | pany. W. H. Metson, attorney represent- | ing the Stockton steamers, will be heard | | by the Harbor Commissioners to-morrow | afternoon. | Bids for paving with bituminous rock | | spaces adjacent to Broadway were re- | celved. The bidders were Stanley J. Fay, | Flynn & Treacy, the City Street Improv | ment Company and the San Franc! A THE SIBERIAS “= PROPELLLRS co N the new dr; s Point went fnto comm: on in the early pa r there was added to g adjusted carefully eve the center of the big dock closed, the water pumped out and yes- terday morning the largest steamship on Pacific was high and dry and in the nds of ‘an army of scraper armed me- nics, who with industrial effort pre- pared the liner’s outside shell for another army of painting men Alongside the Pacific Mail dock or st the shipping the Siberia looks something of the giant she is, but it takes a view in the dry- dock, where every inch of her hull from keel to rail can be seen, to get the full impression of her enormous size. From 1. the bottom of the doek, sel's stern and looking up 2t the enor- mous twin screws, she suggests something in which the adventurous creations of Jules Verne might e taken rides through space and gives a somewhat startling idea of what is meant by a dis- placement of 18,600 ton: A large number of prominent shipping men visited Hunters Point during the day to see the Siberia, but more specially to inspect the basin, which she does not nearly fill. The dock, whieh is one of the largest and finest in the world, was planned and built by Howard Holmes. It has responded to the test of use in every way with satiefaction and the best trib- ute to the manner in which Holmes ca ried out his trust is the fact that this huge piece of engineering was completed and is working perfectly without the ex- penditure of a cent above the estimates of the original specifications. The Siberia is 572 feet long. The length of the dock is 73 feet, so there is room for a fair sized vessel on the dock at the same time as the big liner. There are bigger steamships coming to this coast, but the builders of the new dock looked well ahead, and so far as present indi- cations go have room to accommodate anything likely to be built during a gen- eration or two. The Minnesota, one of Hill's new giants, and the biggest thing marine architecture is likely to attempt for some time, is 630 feet long, or 120 feet shorter than San Francisco's new dry- dock. There is little fear of the most daring shipbuilder turning out anything too big for this dock. The dimensions of the ba- sin are: Length over all, 750 feet; length on bottom 730 feet; width over all, 120 feet; width at bottom, 74 feet; depth of sill, 30 feet. The Siberia will come off the dock to- day and next Tuesday will sail for the Orient. BB NEWS OF THE OCEAN. Ldatters of Interest to Mariners and Shipping Merchants.
