It is now known that Vice's defalcations will amount to $4000. Vice was only under $2000 bonds with the surety company, and, consequently, any amount over $2000 the rallroad company will lose. One by one persons who had paid Viée money for tickets called yesterday at the offices of the Union Pacific demanding transportation. One ,of the first was Frank W. Marston. He paid Vice $319 for tickets, and as he held receipts, he was given his transportation. Then followed J. Baer of 1200 Geary street. He held re- ceipts signed by Vice for $300, and tickets [} RUPTURE CURED At the Ag Afler "Sviicring e of 72, Twcnty Years. Another rumor was to the effect that W. 8. Gage, the mining man, who owns valuable prop- ertles at Valdez, Alaska, and who lives at the Palace, was so friendly to Vice and had such a warm personal regard for the erring agent that he was willing to deposit any sum to save him from ap- pearing in court as a defaulter. GAGE MAKES DENIAL. But Gage, when seen at the Palace Hotel last evening, just before he left for Los Angeles, stoutly denied that he would make Vice’s accounts good. He said that if it was a matter of one or two hundred dollars he would gladly come to Vice's assistance, but when the ian’s defalca- tions ran into the thousands he was not | willing to assist Vice. Vice has been short of money for some time. At least, his finances were in such a bad shape that he had none or very little ready money. - Only a few days be- fore his disappearance he called on an of- ficial in the City Hall and requested a loan of $1000. The official decling make the loan, but advised Vice to apply to some broker. This Vice tried to do, but his megotiations were unsuccessful, owing to his being unable to give any good security. Deep sympathy is extended to both Vice and his family by all the local railroad men. He is spoken of as a ticket agent in the highest terms. Many stories were related yesterday how he had in a legiti- mate way beaten the other rallroad agents jn disposing of tickets, and all ad- mitted that as a suave and clever rail- road man he had no equal in this city. A good many members of Congress and others in Washington regret that Senator Hanna is not keeping house this winter. Last season the Senator used to give corned beef hash breakfasts, which were the delight of those favored with invita- tions. This winter Mr. Hanna will live in one of the Washington hotels, . Money Sent Out to Faithful Echoes of the last gubernatorial cam- paign are still rumbling in the Bourbons' committee rooms In the California Hotel. Debts contracted in a fruitless effort to elect Franklin K. Lane chief executive of the State must be paid and the campaign committee, of which former Congressman Caminetti is chairman, is in a quandary. An urgent appeal has been made for funds to restore a depleted treasury, but so far none have been forthcoming. Cred- itors are clamoring for their money and threaten all sorts of dire things. These threats have been showered upon Caminetti and he in turn has laid them before B. D. Murphy, chairman of the Democratic. State Central Cotmittee, who in turn has called a special meeting of the committee to convene at the head- quarters in thq California Hotel on Sat- urday next at):30 o'clock in the after- noon. In the communication sent out by Secretary McCabe the following state- ment is made: “Ii is hardly necessary to state the fact that the debts incurred by the*committee and still owing have become aegutely pressing, and for the credit of the com- mittee and the interest of the party now and hereafter provision must be made for Ahe payment of these debts. Your coun- sel and assistance at this meeting will be highly appreciated and a full personal at- tendance is expected.” Following is a copy of a letter sent to Murphy by Caminetti, which caused the first named to call the meeting: “It is unnecessary for me to expatiate upon the unfortunate condition of our committee in respect to its financial obli- gatlons, payment of which has been so long delayed that the party has been sub- Jected to the humiliation of the blacklist “With this object in view, after having consulted with all the members of the committee, except one whom I have been unable to see during my short stay in the city, but who, I am sure, would also join with me had I seen him, 1 have to request | that you be pleased to call the State Cen- tral Committee together at once, to con- | matters above | sider and act upon the mentioned.” MRS. J. REECE SUCCUMBS TO LINGERING MALADY After Long Illness Death Comes to the Relief of Patient Sufferer. After a painful illness covering a period of several years, Mrs. Jeannette Reece, wife of Johf Reece, was relleved by death from her sufferings at an early hour yesterday morning. Until two years ago she resided in the East, where the first symptoms of her illness manifested themselves. As time went on there seem- ed, despite all medical attendance could dc, na alleviation of her sufferings, and a trip to the coast was suggested, which svggestion was hatled with delight, as her favorite daughter, Mrs. Philip Kohn, resided here. She passed away at Fruit- vale. The deceased leaves a husband and four daughters, Mrs., C. Lewis, Mrs. V. Lan- caster, Miss Rosie Reece and Mrs. Philip Kchn. The funeral will take place to- morrew at 11 o'clock from the residerice of Mrs. Kohn, 1030 Steiner street, and the interment will be at Cypress Lawn Cem- etery. —_—— ‘“How much do you welgh?’ a friend once asked the late Thomas B.
