May opened unchanged to lc higher at T4%@74%c on a good demand from locals, the early buying being due to ru- mors of colder weather and to the growing im- pression that the market was being manipu- lated by a prominent concern. After a small advance the market reacted on lack of sup- port, May selling off to T4lac. The strength at St. Louls started shorts to covering and there was also some Stuff taken or long account, and under these influences the price rallied to Toc. Toward the end general liquidation set in and prices broke to T4lic. The close was }@%c Jower at T4%@T4lgc. Corn ruled easy throughout the entire ses- sion on quite general reallzing and the break in wheat added to the weakness. May closed Bc lower at 467c, after seiling between 46%c and 4714@47%e. Oats were a shade higher at the start, but | heavy selling by commission houses tended to weaken the market and later the decline re- celved additional impetus from the weakness ‘!"‘l,com- May closed K@% lower at 34%@ %e. % There was only a smail trade in ‘provisions. The decline in grains was responsible for much of the weaker tendency. May pork closed 2%ec lower, lard was off 5c and ribs unchanged. The leading future: nged as follow: Articles— Open. High. Low. The Financier this week says: The officiai statement of the New York Assoclated Banks | ! ‘ for last week showed a reduction in loans and consequently in deposits sufficient fn amount to diminish the required reserve of cash against net deposits by a sum slightly in ex- cess of the loss of cash, hence the surplus re- serve showed a trifling improvement I ad ©of having been wiped out, as seemed probable | carly in the week. The loans were reduced | $15,002,900, making $25,655,900 Yince the week | ending February 28. 'The cash reserve de- | creased last week $4,761,400, which amount | was a little more than the sum indicated by the traceable movements of money, these esti- mates showing a loss of $3,643,800. Deposits | fell oft last week $20, 700, a reduction since | February 21 of $47,067,300, required reserve was diminished last | week $5,114,425 by the decrease in deposits or | £367,025 more than the $4,702,400 loss of cash, a8 noted above, revresenting the increase i surplus reserve and making this item §1,024,- 000. Computed upon the basis of deposits, less $40,185,400 of those of the Government, the surplus reserve is $11,070,350. The statement { was probably made on rising averages for | cash and therefore the condition of the banks 4 | was most likely somewhat better than that in- dicated by the return. But not much im- provement in bank conditions can reasonably be looked for while the sub-treasury continues #o greatly to absorb money from the local banks through fiscal cperations. Of the re- duction of $23,542,700 In the bank rash since February 14, which has been the chief factor in the decrease of $14,862,700 in surplus re- serve in this interval, by far the largest part of the loss has beenfldue to payments for cus- toms. The disbursefents for pensions are ex- pected to be largeMuring the current week and for the remainder of the month and this will tend to lessen the net loss to the banks on Government operations, ~Still the treasury must, it would seem, absorb cash from the banks to the amount sufficient to more than offset the gain to these institutions through the interior bank movement. The recovery in sur- plus reserve from its present low point, there- fore, probably will be slow. That the banks have the situation under control would seem to be shown by the statement of last weck, the institutions, In anticipa#ton of the in- evitable loss of cash, sharply contracting their loans and thereby they pervented the extin- | Ruishment of the surplus, which might, sentl- | mentally at least, have had a disturbing effect | upon the money market. The statements show | that leans are $8,338,400 in excess of deposits. | In the previous weck this excess was $2,953, 000. Exports and Imports.
