Dr. Heber | Newton of the Stanford Memorial Church | had suggested to the Pastors’ Union that | a meeting be arranged for San Jose. This | matter was brought up at the pastors’ meeting yesterday, and after a long dis- | cussion the ministers voted to “‘courteous- | ly decline as a union to have anything to | do with the congress.” One objection ad- vanced was that there was probably no ) nan of sufficient ability In San Jose to meet the experienced upholders of other beliefs, or to represent the evangelical re- | ligion. A few of the pastors favored in- viting the holding of the congress and participating in the meetings, and claimed that refusing the offer of Dr. Newton to secure congress would be an act of discourfesy to him. | { THEATRICAL MANAGERS WANT TO ENGAGE HERMAN Kidnaper of Deputy Sheriff Stayton Receives Offers to Go on the Stage.
