Though this is an inch Jess than last season, farmers h abouts consider this winter without a peer in the history of this section. Sow- ing has not been delayed a single day and all early sown grain is well above the ground. The last rain insures the growth of lately planted seed and if followed by sunshine will cause a large growth of green feed. Farmers are still sowing on | y land and will begin g shortly. With abundant spring ns this section will give a record crop. TULARE IN GOOD SHAPE. A, Jan. 23.—It began raining at 8:30 this’'morning and continued ntil 11:15 o'clock. The precipitation for the day was sixteen-hundredths of an inch. The rain will do some good to pas- . VISALI Vi ture lands, but there is not sufficient moisture to benefit the grain fields and orchards. The prospects for crops in Tu- lare County are favorable if rains come inside of the next fortnight. Thousands of acres of new grain lands are being sown. Many new orchards have been set cut and many orchards have come into bearing this year. Tulare County is not so dependent on rains now as was the case vefore electric power was installed. Now most of the farmers and fruit ranchers have motors of their own and irrigate the land. MERCED, Jan, 23.—Rain fell last night | and to-day at intervals, the amount being about one-third of an inch. Grain is do- ing well in this county and if the weather is favorable the remaiuder of the season the ouput will be unusually large, owing to the fact that the conditions last fall were such that the acreage sown was larger than usual. SALINAS, Jan. 22.—The rainfall for the present storm up to 6 p. m. has been .36. The storm has been remarkable for the lack of wind and an exceedingly - high barometer. The fall, though light, has greatly raised the hopes of the residents of the~upper end of the Salinas Valley. The total precipjtation at this place for the season is nearly four inches. Reports from the lower end of the valley around King City and Soledad indicate a very light downpour. At Soledad the total rain for the storm was only five-hundredths. The farmers, however, fre not discour- aged and trust to plenty of rain next month. With the usual downpour for the to the average. Reports from San Miguel and the extreme southern part of Monte- ey County give a heayy fall for the storm. BENEFIT FROM SHOWERS. SANTA ROSA, Jan. 22—A light but steady rain has been falling all over So- noma County for two days. In Santa Rosa an inch of water fell during the last twenty-four hours. This briags the total for the season to fourteen and a half inches, over three inches in advance of the corresponding date last season. ACRAMENTO, Jan. 23.—The rain has been general throughout the Sacramento Valley and the Sacramento River is slow- ly rising. From all parts of Sacramento County come reports of a generous down- pour. In the last twenty-four hours the precipitation at this point has been .66 of an inch. SAN JOSE, Jan. 23.—Forty-five hun- dredths of an inch of rain has fallen since 12 o'clock last night, mostly in heavy showers. COMMENDS THE ATTITUDE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH NEW YORK, Jan. 23.—Bishop Burgess of the Protestant Episcopal diocese of Long Isiand made an address at the an- nual dinner of the Church Club last night; in which he commended the attitude of the Roman Catholic church on the di- vorce question. The Bishop said In part: The Roman church has stood like a bulwark against divorce. It has stood for the inviola- bility of the marptage-tie and the unity of the home. Because of that it is in the world to- day one of the greatest forces for progress and for Christianity. ¢ Our prayer book says one thing and that one thing is all right, but our canons tell quite a different story. The great work of the Protest- ant Episcopal church is to harmonize prayer books and canons. When our canons declare that communicants in our faith once married are married forever then the Protestant Epis- copal church will have done what it ought to do for the cause of civilization and the cause of Christ. The Bishop said that the young peo- ple of to-day grow up with the idea that there is nothing binding in the marriage tie and that it can be broken almost as soon as assumed. SAVANNAH, Ga., Jan. 22.—Two shocks of earthquake were generally felt in Sa- vannah to-night at 8:15 o'clock. News from the settlements along the coasts indicate that there they were of a suffi- cient violence to rock nouses. From Tybee Island come reports of the greatest violence, and decided alarm was caused among the few who populate the resort at this season. Mrs. Evans, the keeper of the lighthouse, telephoned that five shocks had shaken the lighthouse, so that in the living rooms, forty feet from the ground, the slecping children had been awakened and greatly frightened. 1. other houses of the island the shocks were as perceptible, ana it was some time before the excitement subsided. In the city no report of any damage has been recefved and it is doubtful if there will be any, as the shocks were scarcely severe enough for that. CHARLESTON, S. C., Jan. 2.—An earthquake shock was felt here at 8:11 o'clock to-night, There was one distinct shock, which was not sufficient to cause any damage to property nor to occasion serious alarm. Reports from all points near the city Indicate that the shock was felt through- out lower South Carolina. COLUMBIA, 8. C., Jan. 22.—A decided earthquake shock was felt in this city and suburbs at 8:16 o’clock to-night. AUGUSTA, Ga, Jan, 2.—A slight earthquake shock was felt here to-night at 8:15 o'clock. No damage resulted. MILLS WOULD NOT STAND THE RAISED ASSESSMENT NEW YORK, Jan. 23.—Last year D. O. Mills was assessed in this city on $1,000,- 000 personal property. He then told the commissioners that his legal resi- dence was San Mateo, Cal., which fact re- lleved him from any personal tax here, but that he was willing to pay on an as- sessment of $250,000, as he spent a great part of his time in New York. His offer was accepted. Mills, it is understood, was willing to pay on the same assess- ment this year, but the commissioners put up the assessment to $500,000 and in- sisted that Mills should pay on this amount, whereupon he promptly swore off entirely FALL FROM A WINDOW | VICTIMS OF THE EXPLOSION KILLS A SOMNAMBULIST| ON THE MASSACHUSETTS DIE Elderly Resident of Crockett Walks i Landsmen Dassett and Patterson Suc- Out of a Window While cumb to Their Injuries in San Asleep.
