Following the recommendation of the jury at the inquest T}lesday on the body of Max Kretzhmar, who was asphyxiated by gas in the St. David's House, 715 How- ard street, Detective T. Chief Wittman has had circulars prm(. ed, containing a copy of the ordinance, which was passed in 189, and yesterday he issued an order to company command- ers to the following effect: “You will have the patrolmen of your respective commands report to you forth- with a number of boarding and lodging touges and hotels on their respective beats. You will then have the patrolmen serve upon the manager or proprietor of ach of these establishments a copy of circular, 'which I forward you and | kave them report to you the name of each person so served. You will furnish a re- | port to me as soon as possible, so that steps can be taken to rigidly enforce the | ordinance.’ The ordinance referred to is as fellows: Section 1. Has Mr. and Mrs. Sans Ar- rested for Felony Em- bezzlement. 14 August Sans and his wife Marie were arrested yesterday morning by Detective Wren and Policemen Brown and Holmes or a charge of felony embezzlement. The complaining witness is Carlos Oliverdi, who swore to the warrant before Police Judge Cabaniss. Oliverdi, on whose per- son a loaded revolver was found, was | booked on a charge of carrying a con-| cealed weapon. He was immediately re- | ) leased on bail. | Oltverdi and Sans and his wife were | | employed on a ranch at Caliente, and the | | couple became aware of the fact that Oli- | verdi had saved $1860. Oliverdi left the! ranch a few days ago and got employ- | ment at a neighboring ranch. Mrs. Sans | followed him, and according to Oliverdi | she made a proposition to him that she | would desert her husband and go with hip to Italy. ’Fhey came to San Francisco last Satur- | day and lived together at 1104 Market street until Monday evening, when Mrs. Sans, he alleges, suggested that as he had $1800 he should intrust her with 3909, so that if on their journey to Italy he should ; luse the remaining $%00 he would have her | half to fall back upon. He gave her the | | 3900 and she disappeared. | Yesterday morning Mrs. Sans and her | husband called at 1104 Market street for | | | | her trunk. Oliverdi saw them and de- manded from the woman the return of the $500, but she denied ever having re- ceived it. He told his troubles to Police- | men Brown and Holmes, who went with | him to the lodging-house and detained Sans and his wife till they notifled police | headquarters. Detective Wren was de- | tailed on the case and he placed Sans and | | his wife under arrest. They complained | | that Oliverdi had displayed a revolver, | and when searched it was found In his hip pocket. o Confidence Men Work a Trick. Noel Collin, proprietor of a lodging- | house at 239 Powell street, reported to the police yesterday that a young man | called upon him Tuesday afternoon and | | asked to see a room.
