10 4 THE SAN F RAWNCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 1903 MODIFIES ENGINEERS PUNIGHIMENT: Long Expected Verdict in Elder Case Given by Inspector. HE steam schooner Coquille River ran into the stern of the Norwegian ship Vellore during vesterday morning’s fog, broke her own nose and smashed several thousand dollars’ worth of the Vellore's plates. .The Vellore was Iying at Howard-street wharf, moored, contrary to the reguls tions of the harbor, with some forty feet of her stern projecting beyond the end of the wharf. The fog was at its thickest. The Coquille River, coming from Main | street and bound for Mission-street wharf, | held a course close in to the ends of the wharves and when she reached Howard street her bow found the stern of the Vellore blocking the way. Shortly after Di | Pardee was nominated for Governor b | the Republ n State Convention & pro- | gramme was made at Sacramento provid- |ing that W. H. The Commissioners at the last meeting |of theé board did not execute the pro- gramme. It was deemed prudent to defer | action il to-d Affairs at Saera- | mento have since taken such shape that a_ further postponement is highly prob- able. It is mised in political circles that Commissi Kilburn is not in sym- pathy with the purpose of the progrdmme. Moreover, it is conjectured that Commis- 1oners Kirkpatrick and Mackenzie will | not desire to take an active part in the distribution of harbor patronage while the subject of their own confirmation as Commissioners is pending in the Senate | Should an effort be made at the meeting | of the Commissioners to-day to exeeute the programme the session may become | decldedly interesting. When the plan to | make Davis the attorn was devised it s supposed that the Senate would con- ider and confirm the £ appointments of Kirkpatrick and Mackenzie before the in- | auguration of Dr. Pardee, but the Sena- | ters saw no goed reason for extrem: | haste in the premises and therefore tc the subject under advisement.
