BERKELEY, Jan. 6.—The Prionus cali- fornicus, the largest of cutworms, is de- stroying the orange orchards of Sespe, Ventura County. Orchardists have writ- ten to the University of California for as- sistance in killing this formidable pest, but there seems little aid for them at present. The cutworm the tree and in a short time kills it. whole orange orchard, that of W. S. Gib- son of Sespe, has been destroyed by the prionus and many others are affected and the worm has been found in apple and pear trees. Gibson sent a live specimen to the agricultural department, which ar- rived there to-day incased in the gallery it had bored in an orange taproot. The prionus is two inches long and the gal- lery bored is large enough to insert a man's. thumb. The root is dead. University men know of no way to stop As a works in the taproot of only hope of getting rid of the prionus is to kill it when on the wing. The beetle is a brown, longicorn creature about two inches long. OAKLAND, Jan. 6.—The Board of Edu- cation has decided to reconstruct a por- tion of the burned Franklin School build- ing in East Oakland for temporary usée and to erect a modern twenty-two room brick structure on the west side of the large block on which the old building stands. The board will try to have the amount to be raised by bonding increased, that the money for the new structure may be included. The resignations of Miss Etta Parsons and Miss O. Little, teachers in the de- partment, have been acgepted. Miss Isa- belle McCracken and Miss Elizabeth Pow- ell have been granted six months’ leave of absence, and ‘a three months’ leave has been allowed to Miss Rutherford of the Prominent Young Woman Dijes. BERKELEY, Jan. 6.—Miss Miranda Stranahan Brainerd, daughter of Presi- dent Brainerd of Middlebury College, Vermont, and sister of Mrs. Carl C. Plehn, died late last night at- her sister's honic after a lingering fliness. Her home had been in this city for the last eight vears and she was a graduate of Miss Head’s school. Miss Brainerd was 21 years of age. Professor Thomas R.
