TUOLUMNE, Sept. 20.—Through the spreading of a rail on the Hetch Hetchy and Yosemite Valley Railroad about | eight miles above here, near Nashton, an | engine left the track yesterday afternoon and Engineer George Nelson, Fireman Ed Barnes and Conductor W m Me- Coy were injured. The engine was run- ning “light"” ‘at the time. Barnes walked and crawled about two miles to a tele- phone station and summoned help. A rescue train was made up and brought the men to the Rospital “here, arriving at 9 o’clock last night. McCoy had been pinned under the engine, but managed to extricate himself. All of the men will re- cover. Routs the Grim Reaper. REDDING, Sept. 20.—Clad only in un- derclothing, “Jack” Burke, recently from San Francisco, was found on the railroad throwing rocks at the depot building. His peculiar action was the result of de- lirium arising from fever connected with pneumonia. That Burke is alive is mar- velous, He was taken sick in Keswick shortly after his arrival from.San Fran- cisco, and in delirium leaped through a window and ran wildly around the streets until captured. Physicians said he could not live. They doubted if he could be conveyed to the hospital at Redding be- fore death came. While being taken to the hospital he escaped from the buggy, attacked his pursuers with rocks and made his escape into the hills. That was on Thursday night. This morning, as re- lated, the man was found in the bitter cold air, unprotected from the keen north | wind, but very much allve. —_— The statement comes from New Jerzeyi that since the law requirng witnesses to kiss the Bible when taking an oath was | repealed perjury has increased { marked degree. —————————————————— NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. CONSPICUOUS IN A BALLROOM. Flakes of Dandruff on the Collar and 1 Shoulders of a Gentleman in Full Dress. This is the thing you quite frequently see in the ballroom—a man's black dress- coat literally covered with dandruff. It must be gnnoying to the wearer, and certainly not a pleasant thing to observe. But dandruff can be eradicated. It is a germ disease that will some day cause baldness. Newbro's Herpicide kills the hair-de- | stroying germ and stimulates the hair to | a rich, abundant growth; it does more— keeps the hair soft and pliant. Furthermore, Herpicide is a most pleas- | ant toilet accessory; pleasing of odor and cooling to the scalp. | NEW WESTERN HOTEL, EARNY AND WASHINGTON STS.—RE- | modeled and renovated.
