TACOMA, June 30.—Convicts Tracy and Merrill were seen near Tenino last night. The posse believé they are in the woods near that town. Fifty or more men, headed by Sheriff Mills of Thurston County and Sheriff Deggler of Lewis County, are endeavoring to locate them in the woods between Tenino and Skoo- kum Chuck River. The blcodhounds from Walla Walla penitentiary have proved such a failure that they have been taken back to Vancouver. New bloodhounds from Ellensburg reached Tenino to-day, but up to this evening had failed to pick It is apparent that members of the posse and many officers who have been following the convicts so far have taken good care not to get too near them. This is supposedly due to the fact that Tracy and Merrill are fully armed and are first-rate shots. Several days ago the convicts were practically surrounded near ‘Winlock, but they - were allowed to es- cape, while the officers and their posse went to Chehalis by rail for the osten- sible purpose of heading them off. The pursuit of the two men has assumed a | up the scent. somewhat humorous phase from the standpoint of onlookers. The one determined member of the posse is Charles Ferrell, brother of one of the murdered guards. Ferrell declares he will follow them as long as they live. The people of Tenino, Bucoda, Seatco, Roy, Lakeview and other towns in Thurston and Pierce counties are greatly alarmed over the arrival of the convicts in that section. Their doors are barri- caded at night and nearly every family has loaded weapons at hand. Governor Sage Leaves for Seattle.
