Hooker of Philadelphia has obtained a sixty-day op- tion on 136 acres of land three miles east of Oxnard, and if reports are true this vicinity is soon to have another immense sugar factory. LOS8 ANGELES, June 5.—Eight hundred men were put at work this morning by | the Pacific Electric Railway Company, | laying track on Compton avenue, in the | southeastern part of this city. As soon | &s the property owners became aware of the move of the company to gain posses- | sion of the street, they appealed to the city authorities and a squad of policemen | was sent to the scene with instructions | to stop the work. Before this was accom- | plished the construction gang had succeed. | ®d in laying a quarter of a mile of broad geuge track in the record time of less| than three hours. | Compton avenue is a part of the route | covered by the famous ‘“freight fran- | chise,” which aroused discussion several months ago, and is the urban connection | for the Long Beach electric road, now | belag built by the Pacific Electric Rall- | way Company. The franchise was granted | to the company with & frelght carrying | privilege attached, and, after being sold | o the Pacific Electric Company, was ve- | toed by Mavor Snyder.
