New Fuel Greatly Reduces Domestic Heating Ex- penses. The Tesla coal briquette, designed .-by |its inventors to supersede the ordinary | forms of fuel for domestic use, is fui- filling all the predictions that were made among all classes of people is very in- tense on account of the numerous ad- vantages which it is said to offer. Briquettes were not put upon the San Francisco market until about a month ago, but their sale has been very great and the demand for them is censtantly | increasing. | The briquette, as most people have |learned, is a compressed cake of coal screenings bound together by chemically treated oil. and easy to handle, which is primarily a distinct advantage over coal. 'The cost of the fuel does aot exceed that of coal and the heat efliciency is very much greater, | so that in the iong run its expense is | materiaily less. | One important factor in the success ol the briguette is that its use does away | with the clinkers and with sifting. 'rh chemists who spent years of labor in th effori to secure a fuel which would meet with the approval of the public succeedel in manufaciuring a product which is al- most wholly combustible and, conse- quently, there is but uttie ash left from | | the burning of briquettes. With ail these | advantages it seems only reasonable t) | conclude that the venture will meet with | deserved success. | _France, ‘Germany, England and other European countries’ have been using cer tain forms of briquettes In their navies | for several years. American ingenuity | has been at” work trying to improve on | these fuels. A factory tor the manufac- { ture of briquettes was Stockton is the second of its kind in the | United States. The people who are at_the | head of the Tesla enterprise resolved to surpass all predecessors, and accordingly hired chemical experts, who conducteil exhaustive experiments 'in briquelte mak- ing. An article much superior to an; | thing hitherto manufactured was at last Eerfln’ed and the factory at Stockton was uiit. The new fuel was first introduced into | the interior towns experimentally, and its | reception was so cordial that the bay ¢ | cities were next given the opportunity to , | make a test of the invention. Ten car- came to Oakland They were speedily loads of briquettes about a_month ago. sold and a demand for more arose a‘ once. Since that time a great quantity of the product has been brought to this section and disposed of, everywhere giv- | ing the greatest satisfaction. What its future will be is, decided its initial success. of course, those ventures which are bound to put | her forward in the race of the States for | pre-eminence. When her people fully | realize the general advantages derived from the manufacture of briquettes their adoption as a fuel 18 assured everywhern, Briquettes are made from coal reduced to small particles and combined with ofl, of which there is such an abundance in this State. The process of manufacture is patented from start to finish and the field for sale is as wide as the continent. the dustry is, therefore, a matter of con- siderable importance to the people of the | Pacific Coast. The principle involved in the successful manufacture of briquettes is to attain the greatest caloric power with the leas: possible expenditure of combustibles Coal ordinarily in burning sets free a large proportionate quantity of gasas which do not give forth heat. In conse- | quence of the imperfect chemical process, clinkers are formed and numberless bit: { of coal are not consumed at all. Scien- tists estimate that about half of the heat which might be utilized is thus log. This difficulty is to a great extent obvi- ated in the combustion of briquettes. I+ is improbable that chemical researeh wii} ever succeed in saving every particle of | heat in fuels for domestic use, but the briquette makers have done more towari this end than has been previously ac. complished. Careful combination of the ingredients prevents any such alarming waste as that experienced in the burning | of coal. The hydrocarbons or volatile | gases are made to perform their duties | and satisfactory results are secured. | Tt is thus seen that the new product which is ranidly being introduced into our | homes establishes its_success on solid | clentific principles. That the hundreds who have alreadv been given the oppor | tunity to avail themselves of the use of bricuettes are agreeably surprised by | their advantarcs and have permanently sdopted them for fuel Is surelv a criterion for the future. Any kind of a stove i suitable for the use of hriquettes. Withal, the invention is a hoon to the peonle oi the State and one destined for gratifying suceess, @ i @ building and of the great hotel to stand at the northwest corner of Powell and ary streets are in evidence. the excava- tions being conducted with vigor. The com- | munication follows: SAN FRANCISCO, Oct, 25, 1901 To the Honorable, the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco— Gentlemen: The Board of | vears ago declared that the public convenience | and necessity required the construction of new schoolhouses, a new hospital and an intercept- ing sewer system, and the pecple at an elec- tion held December 29 , voted in favor of issuing bonds for the construction of these improvements. Subsequently the Board of Su- | pervisors was restrained from proceeding by a | suit brought in the Superior Court which was | decided pro forma in favor of the validity of the bonds, but the judgment was reversed in the Supreme Court. | "It is now necessary, in order to construct | echoolhouses, sewers and an hospital, to sub. mit the proposition at an election to the peo- | ple, which I est should be dope some time in the month of December next.
