Smith was dismissed to-day at the instance of the prosecution. Attorney Géneral Dole entered a nolle prosequi in Judge Gear’s court, declaring that there was no evidence to warrant the supposi- tion that a jury would convict. Smith was indicted by the recent Grand Jury on ac- count of testimony he gave regarding al- leged attempts to secure bribes from leg- islators for their support of a franchise for a railroad in Hawaii. Smith testiiel that he did not know of any corporaiion that had been asked for bribes, though he had previously testified that he knew of such a circumstance. The attorney gen- eral stdted to the court that he had in- vestigated the matter and found that the railroad company in question was not in- corporated. This fact made Smith’s tes: mony that he knew of no corporation that URGE NEW LAWS ‘Will Appeal to Congress For Some Needed Enactments. Livestock Industry Said to Be in a Prosperous Condition. —_— DOUGLASS, Wyo., July 11.—To-day's session of the Eastern Wyoming Wool- Growers’ Association convention was oc- cupied with addresses by Governor Rich- ards, President Springer. of the National Livestock Association, Profs. Foster and Nelson of the Wyoming University, Sec- retary Snow of the State Board of Sheep Commissioners, Hon. B. B. Brooks, Hon. C. W. Burdick and others. President Springer took an optimistic Vview of the livestock industry, which was never in a more prosperous condition than now. He urged the election of members to Congress who will be favorable to the greatest of all industries, the growing of livestock. He said that Secretary of Agriculture Wilson had acceded to the wish of the association and would main- tain a livestoek statistical bureau, statis- tics to be gathered semi-annually. He aiso said that the association would urge the goseage of a bill at the next session of 'ongress compelling manufacturers to tag all clothing so as to show the percentage of shoddy material. Governor Richards showed that it is not only possible to run sheep and cattle together, but it is also more profitable than conducting the two industries sep- arately. He said that the idea that sheep ruin a range is a mistake and cited many | instances where sheep grazing had im- proved the range 30 per cent. ive Cheap Xcursions ast VIA anta Fe The places, the rates for the round trip and the dates of sale are below.
