LONDON, May —An editorial in the Yachtsman, to the Shamrock, writt THE INDEMNITY America’s Proposal Is Rejected by the Powers. Greedy Nations Have Deter- mined That China Shall Pay $337,000,000. i, Special Dispatch to The Call. CALL BUREAU, 1406 G STREET, N. | W., WASHINGTON, May 23.—Fruitless | has been the attempt of the United | States to induce the powers to forego the blood which they’ must g#ke with the pound of flesh to be exacted of China. Special Commissioner Rockhill's pro- posal that the amount of indemnity be reduced to $200,000,000 has been rejected | with a unanimity positively ' startling | when it is recalled that Great Britain has been loud in her protestations in la.vor of | placing a lump sum at this figure. The powers have determined that China shall | pay $337,000,000 and not a cent less, and a dispatch recelved by Acting Secretary Hill to-day from Rockhill reporting this fact means the end of America’s efforts on_this point. The proposal of this Government tha.t‘ China issue_bonds to the powers bearing interest at 3 per cent has not been acted upon, but it is likely to be opposed by the powers- of Continental Europe. The bonds issued to ‘this' Government will amount to $25,000,000, and with a govern- mental guarantee there is no doubt that they could be promptly sold at par..Great Britain’s bonds would sell with equal fa- cllity, but Russia’s 4 per cent bonds are sold at par and 8 per cent bonds would consequently probably not command this price. The credit of other nations of Con- tinental Europe Is not as good as that of Russfa. Spain, for instance, which has put in a claim, could not dispose of 3 per cent bonds at par. It will be to the in- tergst of such governments to have the | bonds bear a higher rate. SEARCHING IN LONDON FOR A mHICAL ESTATE‘ No Record of Banker Baskett's Death | Nor Trace Found of Alleged Fortune. LONDON, May 23.—H. H. Gilfrey, a leg- islative clerk of the United States, is now here, endeavoring to trace the estate of William Baskett, supposed to have been a London banker and said to have re- cently died, leaving £1.000,000, the princi- pal heirs being the Basketts of Polk County, Oregon. A story purporting to have originated in London and giving de- tails of the death was primrted in a Salem ] (Or.) paper. Gilfrey is unable to find the slightest trace of Banker Baskett, and the death of a man answering his description has not been recorded at Somerset House, the office of the registrar of births, deaths and marriages. ———— VOLCANO OF XKELOET AGAIN IN ERUPTION Burning Cinders Cover Many Dis‘j tricts and Great Loss of Life i Is Reported. | BATAVIA, Java, May 23.—The volcano ' of Keloet is in eruption.
