DOUBLE tragedy, to some extent s \A mysterious, occurred in a lodg- | { 'DOUBLE TRAGEDY ENDS PLAY : | ing-house, at 106 Taylor street, last evening. Rosle Temple, a denizen of the half world, was shot and instantly killed, and Adolph Dietz, who has for the past two weeks | been striving to gain the murdered wo- | man’s affection, was fourfd gasping In | agony, with a bullet in his brain. -The | apparent ~ explanation 1s that the man, | after having been bled for his money and played with like a toy jn the hands of the woman, took her life and then turned the pistol upon himself. Circumstances {n | the case, however, have caused the arrest of Elmer Thomas, the consort of the un- fortunate girl, and he will be held until a thorough investigation {s made by De- tectives Hammill and Riordan Shortly before ‘8 o'clock -last night Thomas approached Officer Burns on Mar- ket street and informed him that four shots had been fired in a room occupied by Miss Temple and himself, ‘Thomas i | | | | | said that he had not entered the room to. | see what the trouble was, but had been: | told of the shooting by the landlady, Mrs.: | mon. The latter said she had’ | nformation from a woman sing theghouse. 1 ng the m the policemar »nfronted with a bloody_ spectacle. woman lay in a pool of blood that 1 streamed from two bullet wounds in Dietz_had fallen & short dis- pse and blood was fired. - In the dylng a cigar. and the h the ghastly work. was rested under his -left. side with its protruding from .under. the body. resence of the cigar in the hand of the peculiar position of the are the circumstances which led to: - | e 1 of Thomas. Detectives Hammill and Riordan learned’ | that the murdered woman has spent three vears in the tenderloin district. For two years she has lived with Thomas and was ven known by his name. Before sinking o the half world she had been a variety son with w '\ ADOLPH DiETZ ROSE TEMPLE g e PRINCIPALS IN A GHASTLY TRAG- EDY ENACTED LAST NIGHT ON TAYLOR STREET. o actress. Two weeks ago she met Dietz. Her charms attracted him and when he| received a remittance of $300 from Ger- many he spent all of it on the woman. He tried to induce her to live with him, but when. his money was gone ‘she tried to{ cast .him from her and several quarrels | ensued. Nothing is positively known .of | what happened in the room last night, but the plausible solution is .that Dietz, angry ‘and penniless, scored his revenge for the woman's trifling and then sought death himself.. Thomas claims he knew little of his rival and saw him only on a couple .of occasions. The landlady of the | house, however, ~vouches. for thc story | that Dietz's coin had been spent on the | ‘woman.and that within the past few days she has refused to live with him. Two of the bullets struck the woman in the Jeft cheek and powder burns, show- ing close range, were in evidence. Another missed its mark and Imbedded itself in the wall. “The fourth ball was fired into Dietz’s mouth and lodged in his’ brain. Aid for Striking Teamsters.
