One is that the great railway companies doing bus- fness in this State are transforming the | locomotives on their roads to use ofl in their furnaces instead of coal. Another | is that there are many large manufactur- ng concerps that are taking the samse | course to supply power. There afe large refining plants on the shores of San Fran- | cisco Bay and elsewhere in where olls that are adapted to use for il-| luminants are ireated. A comparison of the cpnsumption of fuel ofl with that of coal shows that 3.22 bar- rels of ofl are equivalent to ‘one ton ot good imported coal. uring ofl at $1 40 | good Imported coal-at $7 5 per jon in San Francisco, it shows the cost of ofl to be | $4 66 as against $7 50 for its equivalent in | coal. Moreover the labor required to op- erate with coal is far greater than with oil, in most cases being nearly double. The perfect cleanliness of ofl fuel and the ease and simplicity of supply and regulation make it a_most desirable sub- | stitute for coal. As long as coal remains at $7 50 per ton in California, it cannot be | expected that ofl will fall far below its present price, at least not for some time vear 1889 there were to_come In the 420 into the State of California T340 of coal. To supplant this 6,794,278 barrels of oil will be required. As the supply be- comes greater the uses of fuel oil will alco multiply and comtinually increase the demand for the fuel.
