M. Interment Mountain View Cemetery, Oaklan —_——— PRODUCTION OF GOLD. Frank A. Leach, superintendent, and Charles G. Yale, statistician of the United States Mint, have prepared a prelimihary statement, based on receipts at the Mint and other bullion depositories on this coast, which shows that California pro- | duced in 159 gold to.the amount of 315, 000,000 and silver to § . The increase | over last year is $361,406 in gold and" §220,- 606 in silver. This is somewhat unexpected in view of the record “‘dry year" through which the State has just passed. A num- ber of new mining enterprises have been inaungurated and these, with the increase from the south, have more than made up the deficiency caused by the lack of water in the older mining reglons. Meantime advantage has been taken of the low age of water to repalr a extend ditehes and reservoirs. all of which will have an influence in an increased supply of water and consequently a larger output of_gold and silver for 1500. Messrs. Leach and Yale have also pre- pared a esponding estimate of the output of Alaska mines during 1899, which shows that the territory has doubled its er the previous year. The is: Gold, $4,917.21, and sil- golé product o record for 18 ver, 382, compared with an output of zold « 121 and of silver of $49,- 162 in 1595, This shows an increase for the vear of $2.400,700 in gold and $33,728 gilver, or a t 1 of $2,434.428. Tt should be stated that the returns of the United States Assay Office at Seattle are includ- ed in _this statement as well as those of the United States Mint and private de- positories. An attempt has been made in connection with the Alaska output to segregate the | amounts of gold received so as to approx- | i ely determine the yield of the new | about which | | of Alaska $2,408830 gold and $3935 silver came from the beach and placers of Cape Nome and vielnity. In 1888 out of a total gold product of $11,038,478, from the Klondike $414,295 was | taken to Eastern mints and assay offices and not deposited on this coast. A pro- | portionate amount has doubtless been taken East this year, which may be add- ed to the estimate given. When all the | of mints, refineries, Assay ffices, etc., are received from all over the United States, the figures of the out- put of the year will no doubt be somewhat larger than those given. — e————— OWL’'S CHRISTMAS.
