S Bpectal Dispatch to The Call. BAN RAFAEL, Dec. 20.—“The deceased came to his death from causes unknown.” ‘With this verdict the jury in the inquest held on the body of Peter Lorraine, in Coroner Eden's office to-day, closed the final chapter in the Carson Canyon mys- tery. The most important testimony of the day was that offered by Charley Mechi- ani, the aged Frenchman whose frequent quarrels with the deceased woodchopper were, during the latter's lifetime, the talk of the whole camp. He told of his last meeting with suspect James Dler, in which Dier, speaking of “French Pete's” mysterious disappearance, had used the significant words, “You had trouble with him, too.” Dier's quarrelsome and re- vengeful disposition was brought out in this witness’ testimony. Pedro Sais, the Indian who found the body, described its appearance at the time of his discovery, and several other wit- nesses offered unimportant and meager detalls of the deceaseds life. The general conviction among the wit- nesses seemed to be that James Diler was the man who had done Lorraine to death Dr. Jones, the county physician, stated that the remains were entirely devoid of flesh, consisting merely of bones hold to- gether by the clothing and shreds of dried The clothes were discolored in places by what appeared to be blood stains. There was a slash extending through the jumper, overshirt and under- garment, which might have been caused by a bullet, or by a knife thrust. Sheriff Will P. Taylor advanced it as his firm opinion that the deceased had met his death at the hands of Dier. He also stated that descng‘llnnu and photo- graphs of the suspect had been scatter- ed broadcast over the State and that every effort will be made to apprehend him. The jurors who brought in the verdict were: S. M. Augustine (foreman), L. A. Lan- cel, Dr. G. G. Vanderllp, F. L. Gray, | Charles Shader, Frank Baptist, Jacob Blum, G. W. Shippler, W. H. Downing.
