McADIE, srecast Official EASTERN MARKETS New York Stock Market. NEW YORK, Dec. 20.—The stock market guve & demonstration of improved tone and | nerve in the spirit with which it accepted & slump of 13% points in Brookiyn Transit, ac- companied by sympathetic weakness in other stocks allled to 1t It cannot be said that this viclent decline was viewed with indif- ference, for it effectunlly checked the advanc- ing tendency in the general market and worked & reaction ex! ding over 2 points In a num- ber of standard railroad stocks and from 4 to 7 points in some of the industrials, Thanks o the earlier rise in the market, however, and the following the slump net losses are in nearly all cases small and some substantial gains are shown by important stocks. break in Brooklyn Transit was attributed to | i | | | The | the forced liquidation of @ large inside ac- count, concerning which many unfavorable | rumors of Monday were revived in full force and exaggerated by the bears with a view to breaking the market. At this time last year, after a notable sdvance, the stock sold at about the high Jevel at 157 without ever havi: In the demoralization which fol- lowed the sudden death of ex-Governor Flower pald and by April of this year it touched | the organized efforts to support and save the | conversed upon the stock and kept it mf. There was that to be ---wmpl&h—d to-day and it pursued its course, but was not allowed to unsettle and demoralize the whole miarket as was the case on Monday. The tone of the market during the early hours wa n4 fluctuations rather wide. Prices had ad- noed and recetved an additional impulse up- ward with the announcement of the increase in New York Central's dividend rate, that etock rising to 130 Extreme declines from the high level in other than Brooklyn Transit were: Sugar. 7%: Federal Steel, 6; People's Gas, Manhatian ‘and Tennessee Coal about & snd Tobacco and Metropolitan 4. The weak- mess in raliroad stocks which showed the larg. est_declines could be traced In part to the mame sources as those which were nstble for the break in Brookiyn Transit. The de- clines extended to 3 points only in Rock Tsland, Atchison preferred, Burlington, St. Paul and Touteville. In Brooklyn Transit, Sugar, Fed- eral Steel, Tennessee Coal and People's Gas the recovery reached 3 to 614 points and it amounted from 1 to 2 points all through the list. It viclssitudes since then have been many and various, and transactions in it alone have gone to make up the bulk of trading | on the Stock Exchange on many days. There have been single weeks when the total trans- actions in this stock excerded several fold ite total capital ismie and it has been the favorite of the 1y speculative clase, who delight in manipulation and mystery. Previous to this week ita low price for this year had been Thig, On Monday 1t touched 6% In the generai demoralization, To-day it touched 61 and re- bounded 6%. This review of the course of & wingle stock I8 fertfle in suggestion of ex: planation of the whole meries of events in this week's market. During the day when Brook. Transit was showing most acute weakness the rate for call money was 4 per cent and was in plentiful supply. The rate at no time rose above § per cent and In the late dealings fell to 3 per cent, or yesterday's low level During the day sn engagement of gold for shipment to London was announced and ru- mors were current of further heavy engage. ments to go out on Saturday. The announce- ment and the prospect seemed to have no effect on the local money market. The anomoly of & 2 per cent money rate and gold being allowed to go out while stocks are forced to liguidation &t heavy sacrifices warrants no other conclusion than that the security offered for loans to carry in some instances i unsatisfactory. Such 18 Known to be the case. Yesterday's measures of protection and relief were still in foroe to-day. The market closed strong at the rally at mixed net changes.
