Early news was | generally of a bearish cast, but shorts were nervous over the situation in South Afrf and commenced covering from the start. The circular of Somers & Co. says: “Receipts of Hay still continue quite light, the fotal for the week being somewhat lcss than 3000 tons, about the same amount as for S : the week preceding. There is siderable trouble in _securing cars in the country, end this fact, _together with the stormy weather, has kept shipments down to this small amount. Wet and dam- aged hay continues to arrive in quite large quantities, and until this is all cleared off the market there will be no material change in the present range of prices. The Onomea Sugar Company will pay a dl dend of 3 cents per share on the 5th of N vember. The Argonaut mine in Amador County pald lividend of $20,000 yesterday. The regular and extra dividends pald by the Homestake mine on the 2Zith were $105,000, making $752,500 for the year to date and $7,- ) in all. There have been 276 divijends paid by this mine. The first dividend of the Daly-West mine of Utah was pald on the 2ith. The amount i $30,000.
