Nearly all the ‘s stock markets to the first hour. At the open- .ng there was a rush to buy, as a result of orders placed with commission houses this morning on the announcement that Spain had addressed the United States Government with » request of peace. This early demand was fed quite by realizing sales which held prices back to within a small fraction above last night and even dragged them below the NEW YORK, July strength and activity in to were confined last night's le But these offerings were quite confidently and aggressively absorbed, and the demand was etill unsatisfied. The market was apparently embarked on a sus- tained upward movement when sugar began to pause after an ance of mearly 2 points, which resulted in dislodging heavy covering orders. Very large blocks of the stock, many of them of 10,000 shares and upwards, were taken on the advance. But after touching 141 support seemed to be withdrawn and a steady stream was poured upon the market for the rest of the d Several times the rice steadied and Ilfed slightly, only to make a renewed downward plunge, each successive de- <line slodging heavy stop loss orders. The price dropped over 4 points from the top and rallled only fecbly at the close. The slunp was rccompanied by rumors of unls:x ing for inside interests with a view to I nent. The de- moralization In sugar uns whole list ttled the and put a stop to the upward movement for the | rest of the day. The decline Jin the general market was desultory and was not accom- panled by heavy offerings. It was very ob- vious, however, that professional traders realized tc a large extent at tue opening on | peace news, and they probably viewed with complacency the subsequent reaction, offering ppportunity to buy back stock at lower level. Declines from the best reached a point or over In most of the prominent stocks and net losses In some cases are ax much as @ point. The an- nouncement during the day of the engagement of & small amount of gold in London for im- port had no effect. The transaction was re- parded as of a special character, exchange not [t belng considered at the gold'import ~point. Steriing exhange, In fact, rallied 3 cent in the sctual rate to-dky. Conditions In the money market remained unchanged. Rallroad bonds continue to be absorbed on a large scale, recent issues of 4 per cent for re- prganization purposes being the favorites. Total sales $5,195,000. There was continued large demand for new .Government 3s to-day when issued, very large Individual blocks being taken above 104. CHICAGO, July 27.—With a slump at Liver- pool and favorable weather, Wheat started at a decline, September, which closed yesterday at 3%c, opened at from 65@63%c, and settled to 64%c before all the early offerings could be absorbed. July started at ¥c decline, the first sale being at 70c, and before it did better it s0ld another lc lower, selling at 6. A de- mand for a small quantity of July soon di- vulged how little was for sale upon the appear- ance of any legitimate demand. From 6%¢ there was an immediate jump to 7lje. Trading sentiment was bearish and every one seemed to be on the selling side. About the only de- mand was from shorts, who had a satisactory profit_ and bought in on the decline to secure | it. The export Inquiry was aroused to greater activity by the decline in price. New York reported a considerable quantity of gold going | to the Continent. This caused a slight rally near the close, but partly failed of effect on account of a decline at Antwerp rf 214@5 centimes reported on enormous ylelds through- out the Continent. September closed %@%c lower and December %@%c down. The ncaviness of Wheat was feit in the Corn pit and had a tendency to depress the latter. Generous rains fell in various sections, but the weather was still very dry and hot in some regions of the corn-growing country. Tae gen- eral sentiment was bearish and indicacions of unloading by a prominent long started the entire fraternity in a similar proceeding. Sep- tember left off & lower. Oats were firm early, but later sagged with Corn. September lost %@'%c on the day. Outside buying started Provisions rather steady. Then prices collapsed on the declin in the other grain markets. Commission houses sold freely. Pork declined 2c and lard and ribs 15c each. The leading futures ranged as follows: Articles— Open. High. Low. Close.
