28 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SUNDAY, MAY 22, 1898. FIGHTING STRENGTH OF THE AMERICAN AND SPANISH NAVIES. . The accompanying tables of the navies of the United States and Spain include—so far as relates to our navy—only such as are e fective war vessels. In the Spanish navy list, while it aprarently shows great numerical strength, many of the smaller craft are of questionable utility, and this refers especiailly to the torpedo boats. The auxiiiary navy list is correct up to the latest available data. The sum of $8,000,000 has been expended in the purchase of these vessels and more are daily added, making it impossible in the absence of official data to give the actual strength of this part of the present navy. b Where nonames of commanding officers are found opposite the respective vessles, the vessel has not yet been placed in commission and is still undergoing alterations or receiving outfit at the navy-yard.
