12 ] HELP WANTED—Continued. THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, MARCH 10‘ 1898 TRAVERSER RAN A FAST MILE | Beat His Field Off for thei‘ | Rich Rancho Del Paso Stake. The Despised Outsider Soscol | Gave Chihuahua a Hard Rub. Two Favorites Were Beaten—Paul | Griggs Extended to Down Tea Rose. Miss Rowena in Form Again. «pa” Bradley's corking good colt, Traverser, racing out here in the colors of Burns & Waterhouse, picked up an- other stake at Oakland track yester- day, and did it in a way that dispelled any iliusion that he is not some pump- | kins. He shouldered 124 pounds in the Rancho del Paso Handicap, over a mile, for three-year-olds, and, with Thorpe | in the saddle to hustle him along, | clipped around the ring in 1:40%. Bar- | ney Schreiber's Marplot, with 108 pounds, and Tod Sloan up, stayed with the chestnut for the first six furlongs, which was covered in 1:14, and there had encugh. Traverser won in romp- ing fashion, six lengths in front of Lin- | stock, piloted by “Skeets” Martin Twinkler, against which as good as 150 | to 1 was laid, took show honors. The favorites captured about every- thing in sight, Mossbrae and Odds On proving the only disappeintments. No great “killings” were registered, though all of the winners were accorded hearty support. The track was both fast and slow. Next the rail it was smooth and hard as a billiard table, while ten yards out it was harrowed up nearly a foot deep. This fact nearly caused the de- | feat of Paul Griggs in the fifth event, | as Tea Rose scooted aleng this path, and it took the gray horse’s life to win | out. | Miss Rowena, the fast Burns & Wa- | terhouse filly, made her first start this season in the opening five furlong | scramble, and, with nothing to beat but | a cheap lot of “jacks,” won*under dou- ble wraps. She was a 1 to 2 chance in the ring. Towanda, a 60 to 1 shot, fin- ished second, a length ahead of Mor- | decai, another outsider. The poor showing made by Semicolon on Monday did not prevent his winning | in clever fashion yesterday. The books | laid 6 to 1 about him, and with Spencer in the saddle he headed Engea in the | stretch and led Oraibee past the wire" | half a length, stepping the four fur- longs in :49%. Mossbrae, the luke- warm favorite, was fourth, half a length behind Toluca. Odds On had a slight call in the bet- | ting over Chihuahua in the six furlong | sprint, third on the card. Trailing Chi- | huahua and Soscol all the way, the fa- | vorite showed first fifty yvards from the | wire, but was again passed and finished | third. In a fierce drive Clawson man- aged to get Chihuahua in winner a | nose before the outsider. The 7 to 10 chalked against Paul| Griggs taking the six furlong purse af- | fair lasted but a short time, the gray | going over to the gate a 1 to 2 chance. In a drive Dorsey got him up just in | time to beat Tea Rose a neck in 1:14 | flat. Sam Hildreth's colt Lincoln IT was in rare form and the mile and a furlong proved an easy thing for him. Reced- | ing in the betting from 6 to 5 to two: he assumed the lead in the stretch and | won as he pleased from Red Glenn. Paul Pry finished in the show. o TR?CK ITEMS. | (22)Roulette Wheei:104| 615 Spt. While exercising Arno on the traci he was unable to pull out from the rail In time to escape running into a harrow which was just rounding the first turn. Tommy was tossed up In the air about fifteen feet, land- ing in among the harrow horses. Arno fell on top of the harrow. Fortunately both horse and rider managed to get off with a few scratches.
