2 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 380, 1897 et e JOCKEY CONLEY VAT ABOVE PAR Piloted Three Winners and Proved the Hitof | “Ladies’ Day.” The Colored Wizard Landed the i Crocker Stake on Count | of Flanders. | Libe:tine Dafeated a Crack Fleld of Sprinters_Thorpe Badly Out of Form. Long-shot Conley fairly captivated the fair sex assembled at Ingleside yes- terday to do honor to ladies’ day. He | started in the day by winning with Olive, a 10 to 1 shot, and in the third event, got to the wire first astride Myth, a 6 to 1 chance. But it was with the leg up on Count of Flanders the even money favorite for the $1200 Crocker stake, over a mile, that Conley sghone brightest. The fleld comprised the best lot of two-year-olds in train- | catfon managed to get pocketed on half a dozen occasions and finally making his run too late was led out half a length by Myth, the 4 to 1 second choice, with Conley in the saddle. Skeets Martin got Charlie Reif home in the show with 40 to 1 against him. Of course everybody Ilikes to see Andy Blakeley, the ex-hurdle rider, do well in the way of winning purses, but it would seem as though the Ingleside folks might arrange it so that some outside owner might get a purse now and then. Blakeley had Snowdown In the mile and a furlong hurdle event, and every sure-thing man on the track got the tip that Blakeley's horse was “cherry ripe.” He was backed down from 5 to 2 to 7 to 5, and won in farci- cal manner from Captain Rees, the Corrigan entry. Gold Dust was third. s i TRACK ITEMS. Another horse changed hands yester- day as a result of the claiming clause. Oscuro, entered in the third event to be sold for $500, was claimed by Frank Phillips, owner of Judge Stoeffer, a starter in the same race. Jockey Clawson was informed by the judges after the Tea Rose race that unless he infused a trifle more vigor into his riding he would be given a va- lasting much longer than a week. The trouble with Clawson is, it is sald, that he is unable to find a hatter able to shape his head. After the cyclonic burst of speed by Highland Ball in yesterday's race the officials suspended Golden, who rode him in his preceding effort. On that occasion trainer Van Ness said he was fresh from a trip to the dentist, which ruffied his temper and probably had much to do with his lack of running THE STOCK MARKET. Dullness still characterizes the market for | mining stocks and prices show no change worthy of note. The Exchequer delinquent sale takes place to-day. The Savings and Loan Society of San Fran- clsco has declared a semi-annual dividend at the rate of 4 per cent per annum on term and 3 1-3 per cent on ordinary deposits, payable January 3. The Columbus Savings and Loan Socfety has declared a semi-annual dividend at the rate of 4.20 per cent per annum on term deposits and 8.60 per cent on ordinary deposlts, payable | January 8. | The Mountatneer Mill and Mintng Company of Nevada County has levied an assessment of 3 cents per share, delinquent January 22. | The Merrimac Mining and Miliing Company of Nevada County has levied an assessment of 20 cents per share, delinquent January 27. | The delinquency in office of the Grayson as- eessment of 10 cents per share on the capital stock of the Hale & Norcross Mining Com- | pany has been further postponed to January | 21, and the day of sale to February 1. | The yield of the Overman mine for the past | week amounted to 6 carioads of ore, the aver- | age car sample assay of which was $24 87 per ton. This ore was extraeted from the workings | in the north drift on the $00-foot level of the mine. Men are still engaged in enlarging and timbering the incline upraise. The official letter from the Occidental Con- solidated mine for the past week says: 580 level—The upraise started from the south drift at a int 70 feet south of west crosscut 2 has been carried up 12 feet through low grade ore; total height, 18 feet. 660 level-East crosscut 5, started at a point in south drift $40 feet from | the station, has been advanced 21 feet through | porphyry and seams of quartz; total 6 feet. lengt 750 level—The south drift has been extended 2§ fest through ore of fair quality; | total length, 614 feet. | ‘There was reduced at the Kinkead mill last week, befors work was suspended at that mill, 84 tons of ore extracted from the 400-foot level | of the Gould & Curry mine. The average bat- tery assay of the ore.was as follows: Gold, $2 §8; silver, $1080; total, $13 68 per ton. ing, and nearly everybody wanted a | ticket on the Count. Conley allowed 8t. | Cataline to make the pace to the stretch, where he took command with his mount, and the sturdy little son of St. Carlo won in a romp in 1:41 flat. Torsida in a drive deposed Eddie Jones for the place by a head. The others showed a lacking of cla The attendance was large enough but the betting was not as lively as it might have been. The first three fav- orites were turned down in the most approved style of the art, after which Bnowdown and Count of Fianders help- ed pull the talent out of an unpleasant finaneial predicament. The six-furlong sprint with Libertine, May W., Highland Ball, Tea Rose and rolley as starters, terminated most upexpectedly. May W. and Tea Rose, fancied in the order named, carried the bulk of the money bet. To the surprise of all, Highland Ball went out in front with May W. setting the pace to the stretch. Here all conveniently pulled out, letting Libertine through next the rail. From that on the race was a fiasco, Galen Brown’s big sprinter gal- loping in under double wraps, five lengths ahead of the favorite. High- | land Ball was third, haif a length be- fore T Rose. Argentina. the Baldwin entry, was plainly the best of the twelve starters in the opening event at seven furlongs, | but Henness; slovenly ride prevent- | ed her from scoring. Conley sent Olive, a 10 to 1 shot, out with Pat Murphy in front, and at the end was ridden out a peck before the tardy coming favorite. Pat Murphy finished in the show 1 Charley Thorpe contributed his mite | in adding to the downfall of the cholces | by putting up a miserable ride on Ber- | nardillo, the 7 to 10 favorite, for the mile selling affair, third on the card. The Baldwin entry was hammered | down from even money, but Thorpe ! power. Golden will be given a chance to explain. Conley was fined $50 for taking up too much of the track both with Myth and Count of Flanders, and was in- formed that a continuance of his broad-gauge tactics would Insure for him a rest on the ground.
