A week ago to- ay John Brown, a boy, was going arcund to houses on Telegraph H:ll witha case of Christmas toys which he was trying to sell. He noticed that three boys were follow- ing bim, but he did not dream that they meant mischief. When he got to a se- ciuded spot on thke hiil they closed in upon him and took the case of toys from him, saying he must he tired and they would help him carry it. They led him along till they got to3the quarry on Sansome street, one carryving the toys. Tkere while one garroted him in the most approved fashion another went through his pockets, taking his money and his silver watch and chain. The three then disappeared. Brown reported the matter at polics headquarters and Policemen Ellis and McGowan were detailed to investigate, as the boy footpads were suspected of be- | | | front and familiarly known as “w rats,” Monday, ter Ellis and put a charge of vagrancy against nim so to detain him. Dagnio at first denied that he knew anything about the robbery, of the trio, and e they led Brown to the quarry. He not say wkt arroted and robbed Brown. Dagnio was booked vesterday aficrnoon for grana larceny, so thet he can be sent to the Whitiier Reformatory. ALASEA CAR GOBS BAST Known. Large Crowds Attracted by the Ex- hibit at the Ferry Informa- tion Bureau, wonld The crowd that inspected the exhibit of the Alaska Trade Bureau yesterday was even greater than on Tuesduy and from of persons who were drawn either by curi- sity or a desire to inform about the requ rements of a miner's life on the Yukon flowed steadily through the room. In fact, it was found necessary to place a man on duty whose special charge it was to admit a limited number of per- sons at one time, so that there woula be no uncomiortable crowding. While many were residents of the city, induced by curiosity solely to see the exhibit, there were a great many who represented par- ties preparing to leave early in the spring for the Klondike. Some of these foreran- ners of those to come announced that they represented parties in the Southern and Middle States. In tie Eastern States the movement does not seem to bave yet be- come 8o strong as in the fartber West. Inasmuch as | the greater vart of the river transporta- | tion” will be conducied by companies | owned and cperated in Ban Francisco, travelers going this way will nave a great advantage over those who go to St. Michael from the sound ciiles. The Alaska Commercial Company, the Alaska | and Yukon Transportation Company, and | tbetransportation company operated by Liebes & Co. will all buok passengers from this city through to Dawson City, and itis safe to say that tbeir carrying apacity will be engaged long in advance. Passengers from the sound cities to St. Michael will find very few boats con- necting with their steamers and will be at | a great disadvantaze to those shipping from here, because it is an assured fact that there will be no passengers placed free on the river bosts, which can be en gaged at the time of their arrival at S | their special business to carry such passengers us are delivered to them by their own steamers at the mouth of the Yukon. The North American Trading and Transportation Company, which is oper- ated from the sound, must first of all see 'hat the stocks of its store on the Upper Yukon are replenished and for this reason they will be inclined to give prefer- ence to their own freignt over whatever passenger business may fall to their share. The special car, winich has been put at the disposal of the Alaska Trade Com- mittec will leave for the East to-night. All arrangements have been perfected and decorations of the car will be in piace early this afternoon. One of the business firmsof the city in sending its subscription to the company makes the suggestion that many persons bave not sent in voluntary contributions becanse they did not know the adaress of the Alaska Trade Committee nor to whose order checks for the general fund should be drawn. Last Monday he was seen in the tender- loin district in the company of a woman who is well known to the loeal police. He seemed to have considerable money, and 10 a friend hesaid he would never ve taken without a d:sperate struegle. Matthews secured a picture of him from the rogues’ gallery, together with his record. Jonnson is known as one of the most desperata burglars in the State.
