2 2 1 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 16 ® e o, TEE R R e e e el Ll MORELLITO WON i HARTIN UP Superb Riding on “Jockey Bill's” Part Landed the Racine Stake, Monitor, With 1500 to 1 Laid Against Him, Made a Great Showing, Lucky and Dog Ran Away With a Race Changed Hands—Watomba Tirst in Handy Fashion, | | | The Racine stake for two-year-olds, val- ued at $1000, was decided at Oakland yes- | terday. The distance was six furlongs, and of the six starters, Morellito, a son ot | the dead Morelio, trained by Mat S:orn and ridden by Willie Martin, proved the fleetest footed. Tue betting all favored the Oakiand stables’ pair, Torsida and Novia, the former with Skeets Martin up being the one relied upon to carry off the prize. The Burus & Waterhouse duo, Eddie Jones and Sybaris, commanded second call, while 5 to 1 was obtainable against Morellito. After a long delay, Ferguson sent five of them away; Her- moso being left. Sybaris was the one delegated to make the running, and he set & merry clip for Torsida 10 the stretc: At this point Tersida was third, but “Skeets” .made a shoot out and soon showed a couple of lengths in front. The heavy going, though, proved too much for the filly, and Morellito, taken to the outside patn, headed her again and, in a drive, downed Eddie Jones a length. Torsida wus a bang-up third, The winner | was splendidly ndden by Martin. | 1he books ull guit well ahead on the | ¥, but two slightly backed favorite- | winning. Valencienne, 8 to 1, Count of Flanders, 110 3, Watomba, 8 to 1, Morel- | lito, 5 to 1, an Lucky Dog, 8105, were | Lorses which earned brackets. Lucky Dog, the notorious mudlark, | reveled in the heavy goinz and a weakly | played 8-to-5 favorite captured the final seven furiong run away off from Double Q Sam Hilaseth ¢ntered the Darebin | Lorse in the race, a selling affair, to be ) for $700. He was boosted $500 by Ed Corrigan and Hildreth let him go. Probably a lenger price was never laid against a horse that madeasgood & suow- | ing as did Monitor, a starter in the sec- ond event. One penciler had the temerity | to chalk 1500 to 1 against the gelding, which | geiting away well 10 a poor start, actuaily led into tue stretch. but tired and finished | third. A big bunch of fifteen two-year-olds | started in the opening five-lurlong scram- | b.e, with Rebel Jack holding first piacein | the betting at o1ds of 5 t0 2. Gray on Valencienne, an 8 to 1chance, showed out | in the lead soon after the start and was | never headed, leading the favorite out by three lengths. Barney Schreiber's Im- perious was third. i Tom Ryan"s recent purchase, Count of Flanuers, was an overwneiming favorite ior the six furlong sprin: next decided, and had be not outciassed his company many pounds would have suifered de- feat. Mercutio, Walter J ana Ch'c de- layed the start for some time and Fergu- son finally let them off to a very str: gling start, the Couat being the tail- ender. The 200 to 1 shot, Monitor, and | Frompto cut a fast clip until well into the | stretch, where Clawson by hard riding managed to vet the favorite up, and in a hard brush with Mercutio got the verdict by 4 peck. Monitor landed in the show. The Baliw:n entry, San Venado, opened an 8 to 5 favorite for tue inird event, n five-furlong spin, but receded to 5 to 2 and finished ibird. .Doc Tuberville made his first appearance at the meeting on Wa- tomba, against which the ringlaid 8 to 1, and beading the others when straightened for the wire got the Montana lilly home an eisy winner over ihe post favorite, Lord Marmion, with Willie Martin in the saddle, e TRACK ITEMS. After ap 1investigation of the Senator Bland-Howard Mann race the judges have exonerated Holmes and-he can again accept mounts. count of a too iiberal use of scratch blanks. In future at Ingleside and Oakland, and until further notice, it shall be optonal with the judges as to the extent of dis- quaiification 1n cases of fouls. It has been a custom for all time when a horse is dis- qualified for a foul that he shall be placed last. The officials at the tracks, in view of the fact that at times the track is apt to be muddy auring this the rainy season, and that there is bound to be bumping on bad tracks, have decided to give the judges power ro place horses back a position in a race instead of placing them iast. Thus if two horses are front clear of thbe field and one bumps the other without intesfering with any otber horse, the judges may reverse the positions of the iwo horses without affecting the vosition of any other horse in the race. Shouid a horse interfere with more than one horse, his position in the race may be changed accordingly. Intend- ing foul riding will be stricily dealt with.
