Emil Ney, an ex-policeman, was knocked down and robbed oi his gold waich and chain on Market street on Sat- urday night, November 6, and reported the robbery 1o the police. Yesterday he went to Judge Campbell’s court, where the preliminary examina- tion of Hesketh and his companion, Don- ovan, was being held. He identified Though a most disagreeable day at the | track, the usual attendance of the “‘faith- ful’’ saw five showers of racing at Ingle- side. The sou’'wester whistled and screeched through the grand stand and everybody went about under closely | reefed sails. Starter Culdwell resembied | a bydraulic miner with his damp-weather | make-up, and the jockeys, clothed in their oilskin suitings, looked like slabs of bacon | ready for shipment to the Klondike. | Three of the*five favorites sent out won | Hesketh as the man who robbed him, and purses and the books were hard hit all | so notified the police. The mile and a sixteenth event was declared off, and a six-furlong dash with s field of nine stubstituted in its place. Moylan, witb Thorpe in the saddle, was quickly played down from 3 to 2 to4 to 5, und in a very close finish got tue verdict | from the fast-coming Schiller by a scant | head.
