DID 0T HANG RENTON. Crew of La Ninfa Denies That He Came Nearly Being Lynched. Vessel on Which the Copper River Expedition Took Passage in Port. The schooner La Ninfa that fif:een days ago set sail from the coast of Alaska for this port, leaving behind her thirty-six poor.y supplied men who will battle with ihe elements of the far nortn in an en- deavor to yain fortune on the shores of the Copper River, arrived here last even- ing. Four ot the party that left here last September on the vessel with visions of fortune blinding their eyes to the difficul- :ies of attaining it in the frozen goid- fields returned with ner. They are Wil- liam Renton, president of the expedition that salled on the La Ninfa; W. J. D. Young, €. L. Green and Richard Fripp. Renton is glad to get back to a country where law and order prevail. As presi- dent of the expedition he agreed to carry the thirty-nine gold seekers who com- prised his party to the Copper-niver fields, iurnish tnem with provisions for a year, and see that they were comfortably in- stalled at their destination, for $500. Renton did his Lest to keep his promise, but nature rose up against him, and he tounda that he would be unable to do as he agreed. He got his vessel and parties to Aiaska, it is true, but when he at.empted to sail the Copper River, he feund it im- passably frozen. Seeing that be would ve unable to take the party up the Copper River he landed it at Orca and took the provisions ashore. Then the trouble commenced. An exami- nation disclosed the fact that the food was of poor quality, and, it is said, of insuffi- cient quautily to last the men the time they would be required to remain at the gold fieid<. The men began to threaten and Renton became frightened. Many of the party declared that they woulid L:ave revenge, and fearing that he woula be severely dealt with the president kept close to his vessel and Iriends. The schooner finally departed from Orca, how- ever, and the troubles of Renton were at an end. The steamer Blanchard, which arrived at Astonia, Or., on the 26.b inst., brougnt down from the North a story that Renton had been hanged by the angry party of gold-hunters he left on 1he ble:k stores of Alaska, but before death came to re- lieve him o! his sufferinzs the mob re- pented and cut him down. The report is denied by Hans Mach, acting mai= of the schooner. and many of the sailors on board. They say that Renton was simply frightencd by the pariy and was not even touched by any one, lei alone being hangzed. As soon as the vessel arrived in port Captain Saunderer and Renton leit her and went to their homes in Oakland. The La Ninfa then sought anchorage and to-day she will probably go 1o Oakland Creek and lie up for the winter. UNION REFORM LEAGUZ. A Ceniral Branch O: ganized to Work for Christ an Socialism.
