0. CALL, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15 1897 C. M. DAISS IS THE CHAMPLON He Breaks the World's Ten- Shot, Ring Target, Pistol Record. At Fifty Yards He Keeps His Bullets in a Three-Inch Circle. Many Rifle Contests for Oash Prizes, | Turkeys and Medals at Sheil ¥ound. Ap the rattle of muskets and rifles and the odor of burnt powder records were made and money, medals, poultry and pigs were won at the shootinz range sell Mound yesterday. The principal features of the day were the prize shoot of the Norddeutscher Schuetzen Club, the tur- gey sbooting g.ven Ly Captain Siebe and the breaking of the world’s pistol record by Charles M. Daiss of the Columbia Pi tol and Rifle Ciub. Dai s has lonz been recognized as one of the best pistol shots in the West, and he holds several of tha beautiful medals pre- sented by Gorion Blanding to the club. His performance yésterday piac: in the (ront ranks in the world in the use of the target pistol. He made a score of | 29 points, Columbia target ¢ unt, fired on the club’s diamond record medal match. | As he fired ten shots, this means that he bunched his bulle:s in a circle averaging a two and nine-tenth inch circle, fif y yaras. It is safe to say that this is the best ring-target score ever made in the world, and the young Californ'a mark: man feels justiy proud of his feat. In this he beats J. E. Gorman’s score of 30, which | was regarded as the *‘cinch” on the prize. Although the medal is a valuable prize and there are several excellent shoisin the club, it is doubtful if 29 will be beaten hi< year. His ‘ndiv ots were: 1 2762513 i The Columba Club tem of marking that Wainut Hill (Mass.) rax has adopted a sys- n vogue on the e, that of “plug- | ging” ine bullet holes with small colored | wooden plug-, to show the shooters where their shots strike. Esch hole is pasted | over as soon as another stot is fired. An- other innovation in addition to this is the | introduction of powerful spyglasses on the 200-vard range, so as to enable the rifle- men to see the piugs. Tuese improve- ment: met with the favor of those who gave the system a trial yesteriay. The principal advantage of this over the old way is that every snot speaks tor itself and there can be no dispuie over the scores. Theo. Meyer was among the guests of the club. He was rec2nily of the Los An- geles Pisiol and Rifle Club, but as he expects to make his home in thiscity he | intends 10 join the club of which he wasa | guest. Mr. Meyeris a first-class shot with pisto! and rifle. A number of good scores were made on the ciass and re-entry medal matches, among them being one 43 Creedmoor count, on the Glindeman military march, by ¥. O. Young.
