THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1897. RODE A BURRO FROM NEW YORK R. Pitcher Woodward Comes to Town Astride of * Macareni.” Bet on Bryan and Had to Cross the Continent on a Donkey. Was 340 Days on the Way and Would Not Repeat the Trip for $25,000. s The newspaper man who, because he bet ‘on Bryan in the late Presidential canipaign, had to ride a donkey across tne continent and reach his destination to-aay at noon or forfeit §1000, completed his journey when he arrived at the Palace Hotel shortly after 2 o'clock yesteraay afternoon astride of the original burro, “Maucaroni,” on which he started from New York City last fall soon after Mc- Kinley was elected. When he arrived here yesterday R. Pitcher Woodward was a frignt, an ani- mated scarecrow, made grotesque by long hempen-colored hair, a seedy, meager, blonde beard, a dilapidat-d sombrero, a long-talled cataway coat torn and soiled and of a pronounced greenish hue from long exposure to all kinds of weather, and a pair of irayed and tawny leggings, pieced out, rugged, baggy trousers and partly covering a pair of misshapen snd worn bicycle shoes. As if this were not enough 1o attract attention, he wore, by a condition of the vet, a pair of big steel- | rimmed spectacles, tue right glass of | which was badly cracked. His slow coming up Market street, ac- compan:ed by bis *valet,” T. W. Glines of Cedar Rapids, lowa, also riding a well- laien burro, his appesrance in and sub- sequent ejeciment irom tae court of the Paisce Hotel and his ride to a stab.e on Bush street to put up his donkeys all at- tracted a motley, eager and curiousthrong of men and not & few women, wio trailed nis footsteps and crowded close aboui him and his burros. Atter he had changed hisapparel R. Pitcher Woodward did not look the tramp, although he is not blessed with a handsome fsce or an attracuve figure. He hes b-en a journalist for the vast six | vears, during which time he has been eu- gaged principally in writing semi-humor- ous arucles for a newspaper syndicate. He is aiso the author of “Frozer Humor,” now going through its third ediuon. For two years he was a cadet at West Point. His father is ex-Judge B. W. Woodward of Brookiyn and he nas an uncle in Port- iand, Or., the well-known ex-Judge John H. Woodward, whom ke proposes soon 10 visit belore returning Easl. Speaking of his trip he said: *My bet was with Benjamin Lillard, pubiisher of Popular Science News. I Was to start without a doilar and to earn my living by the way. I was io wear a plug hat as far as the Mississippi River and a Prince Albert coat. I wore the coat ail the way here. I wasto wear big spec- tacies aud so was the donkey I rode. “Until the last three weeks, wnen 1} found it necessary to push forward with- out losing any time, I had written forty syndicate letters, or eighty-five columns | of newspaper stuff, but I coula not use auy of that professionally earned money | until 1 should arrive here. By careiul estimaties of persons living along the way I velieve that I have ridden a total distance of 4096 miles. It took me exactly 340 days. My largest day’s ride was iforty-five miles” into Dayton, | Nev., and my suortest was three mules, from Greenville to Daiton, Obio, through mud seventeen inches deep. I clambered along on rail fences and aragged the aonkey. I would rot reveat my trip for $25,020 A donkey’s stubbornness and slowness are dreaafully trying on a man's nerves. And I suffered haraships, particularly on the cold winter nights in the Kast, for I had to work most of the day (o earn expenses, I value ‘Macaroni’ now at $5000, and I expect to gew thatfor nim when I return, but it will only be with u signed contract that he will never be subjected again to hard work. He has accomplished the greatest record ever made by a donkey, and I daily studied bis health and needs 10 get nim here alive. The dog that came all tne way with me, thovgh ofien footsore, isall ri_bt and I would not sell him for $500." Mr. Woodward is staying at the Occi- dental Hotel, to the proprietor of whica he brought a letter from Sam Duvis, the well-known journalist of Carson, Nev. 'WEATH SWEET VIOLEDS mains of the Late Charles F. Smurr, Magnificent Floral Pieces Sent by Friends and the Departments of the Railroad Company. Within the darkened parlors of the Smurr residence, 926 Devisadero street, there rested yesterday afternoon the mor- tal remains of the late C. F. Smurr, who was the freight traffic manager of the Bouthern Pacific Company. They were i & black cloth covered casket with silver trimmings, and the tenement for the dead was covercd with a purple silk pall, to which were fastened hundreds of bunches of those fragrant emblems of pure love, California violets. In the front and the back parlors there were a great number of most magnificent floral offerings irom friends and acquaint- ances of the deceased. The designs were meny, and were all that artistic taste and the products of the open garden and the hothouse could assim:late and'make sym- bolical and attractive. Oue of the most attractive pieces was an immense cross and anchor of white Howers and delicate ferns supporting a great heart of purple violels representing Faith, Hope and Charity, anotber was a floral urn of white chrysanthemunms, filled with the rarest of these white beauties nestling in spravs of asparagus green and maidenhair fern; a companion piece was another urn of simi- lar dimensions built up of roses and ferns and filled with American beauties, Then there were immense pillows of Lu France roges, crosses of pure white roses in beds of ferns, sheaves of wheat with sickles, baskets filled with orchide, and bunches of flowers, some tied with white and others with purple bows of satin. “These were the last sad tokens of re- speet from L. M. Fletcher, William Sproul. E. Hanley, J. D. Cuthbert, G. W. Luce, H. C. Bush, William J. Sctoli, Mrs. Rithard Gray, J. J. Valentine, R. Kohler R. Weidon, T. D. Connelly, S. C. Nash, W. Storer, W. G. Curtis, Mrs. A. N. " Towne, J. F. Krutschnitt, A.J. Hecht- mun, and fiom those connected with the following departments of the railroud company: The general freight office, the operating department, the local freivht department and other branches, the Oc- cidental and Oriental Steamship Com- panv and others. Near the head of the casket sat the mother of the deceased, his widow, his brother and wife and the only one of his five sisters in the city at this time, the four others being in the East, while around the parlors were the heads of the several departments of the railroad com- pany, members of the California Council ot the National Union, of which Mr. Smurr was the first president. and a great number of personal friends and acquaint- ances. : In accordance with the wishes of the family the ceremonies at the house were of the sim:lest characier. The Rev. Rovbert Mackenzie of the First Presby- terian Church off-red a praver. After that he spoke a few eulogistic words ex- tolling the virtues and the charity of the deceased and offered words of consola- tion to the mother, widow and other rela- tives, after which those assembled moved around the casket to take a last look at the fsc: of the one they had known and respected in life. As the silent procession moved there was scarcely’ one who did not drop a ear in token of sincere sym- patby. J. A. Fillmore, 1. H. Geodman, George W. Luce, George W. Fletcher, C.J. Wil- der, E. E. Holton, pal -tearers represent- ing the railroad offices, and George Klink and D. D. Stubbs, representing the Occidental ana Oriental Steamsh:p Com- pany, formed on each side of the casket, which was borne by sixX body-bearers, and they escorted the remains to the hearse. The cortege moved to the railroad depot and there the remains were placed ina special car for transportation to Los Angeles. LAVIGNES BI& WINNING, Eighty-Seven Hundred and Fifty From His Battle With Wolcott, Did Not Discover That He Was Cham- pion for Several Days After the Fight. George Lavigne is $8750 better off than hie was & week ago, as the result of his desperate battle with Joe Wolcott, the sable welter-weight of the O'Rourke sta- ble, that amount representing 75 per cent of the receipts of the Pavilion after ex- penses were deducted by the manage- ment. The larger portion of the coin is now in the hands of the “Kid’s” mother at Sagi- naw, Mich., where the major portion of his earnings in the ring are always remit- ted. The fat win on the Wolcott match came at an opportune time, for Lavigne was a big loser in the recent failure of the Bank of Saginaw, in which he was a heavy stockholder as weil as a aepositor. The larger portion o his winnings for several years past were in the institution, and he does not expect to realize more than 50 cents on the doliar. All ‘that Lavigne had to say when he and his brotuer drew down the money was: +Say, Billy, this will help out mother and the sisters for awhile.” Lavigne cares next to nothing about the handling of his own coin, and squanders little of the thousands tnat bis doughty fists win. He excused himeelf to a crowd the other day, and when asked where he was going, confided to a friend that he wanied to see his brother Billy, to get a “*dollar or two.” A good story is told of Lavigne’s mod- esty regarding his recent victory He was in a weil-known resort yester- day with a friend, and every other man who came in extended the glad hand to him, cailed him *‘George,” and congratu- lated him on his fight. “Say, Dan, who are all these people,” asked the boxer as the ninth man wruny his hand. “I don’t seem to remember them all.”” “Qu, tuey are your friends,” remarked his companion, who knew most of the sports who were congratulating. “That's all right; they might have been Wolcott men before the fight,” rejoined Lavigne. “Yes, put vou were the winner,’ re- marked his triend, and t en » thought suddenly seemed to strike Lavigne. “That’s so, Dan; 1'm the champion now, ain’t I? I never thought of that.” Those who extended the glad haud for the rest of the afternoon were invited to “refresh’” with the champion. = et SAN FRANCISCO **CALL."™ PUSINESS OFFICE of the San Francisco CALI— 710 Market street, open unul 12 o'clock every Dight in the year.
