10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1S97. e e e MESSENGER HUGHES 00T, The Opponent of Cakewalks| Discharged by the Collector. Playing Craps After Working Hours Charged Against a Literary Genius, C. A. Hughes, the colored messenger in the Appraiser’s office, was removad yes- terday by Collector Jackson in pursuance of ordersreceived from the Treasury De- partment. Some time ago charges were made against Hughes to the effegt that he played “craps.” There was no allegation that he bet on horse races, played poker and faro, or opened wine, but ‘‘craps” seem to be equally opposed to good morals and Mr. Hughes bad togo. His| successor will be taken from the eligible list. Hughes was a polite letter-writer and was the author of several letters recently published in the newspapers decrying that noble sport known as the cakewalk. He considered it beneath the dignity of colorea ladie< and gentlemen to give cak walks, thereby exposing big feet and al- lowing themseives to | ¢ made monkeys of by the pcor whi ash. His iast letter was a defense which had areactionary effect. In that communi- cation, also published 1n tue daily press, he stated that Collector Wise nad been threatened with the ioss of a customer for Yellowstone whisky unless he discharged | Hughes, but Mr. Wise let the whisky go | and kept the colored person. Then Mr, Hupghes’ leiter went on to siate thathe wondered whether Collector Jackson would be equaily as true to him if threat- ened with the loss of a good customer for his foothill soda water. In the opmion of good critics Mr. Hugbes' letier was a gem, scintillating | with wit, satire, irony, repartee and other | good thinzs. The gentleman who does the bouncing for the Secretary of the | Treasury evidently thought so too, for he at once instructed Ccllector Jackson to | give Mr. Hughes permission to go out into } the wide, wide world, where such episto- | iary talent is in demand at high prices. - Has Kept the Rig. G. Guittarq, livery stableman, 507 Jessle street, swore to a complaint i Judge Joa- chimsen’s court yesterday for the arrest of J. Brackslt on the charge of embezzlement. He alleges that Brackett last Friday hired a horse and wagou 10 go 1o old §t. Mary’s College, and | since then has failed to return with the rig. REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS. ¥dward I.
