10 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22 1897 RELIANCE AND STOCKTON TO MEET. The Great Ba'l Game Which Will Be Played Next Sunday at Recreation Park, Corner Whata crowd there will be at Recreation Park, Eighth and Harrison streets, Sunday! Eighth and Harrison Streets. Every baseball enthusiast in the City wiJl be there. And what a game they will witness, too! A game played with a live bali and between piayers full of snapand ginger. Oakland is going to turn out en masse, for her crack nine, the Reliance, is going up against the Stocklons. N Van Haliren pitcoed at Sacramento last Sunday and atter the first three Those who witnessed the game say that Van, the Haltren wilt twirl for the men from acros innings settled down and pitched great bail. GEORGE HARPER, Who Will They receive 60 per cent of the gate receipts s the bay. Pitch for the Stccktons Sunday. ; secondly, of the series the amount wili be given to the winuing club. The makeup of the nines will be as follows: Reliance. Positions. Stanley . Catcher.. Van Haitren..... Pitcher Muguire First baseman Stuiz Second baseman Lange Ihird baseman. .. Ritey. 11105 ... Shortstop Borland...... Left field.. McGuire.... "\ Center fieid. Deane or Drews. Kight fieid Perrine.. % Exira . The game wili be called at 2: There wi Central Par! ocre order. do not take kindly to the proposition. It will be between Santa Cruz and the California Markets at These c'uls will pliy sffth a two-bit dead ball, and of course, because of this fact, their playing will be of a medi- The Fresnos and the Alerts are scheduled to play in Sacramento on Saturday and Sunday. They say it is a scheme 10 lessen the gate receip The Sacramentans decline to bz fooled. George Van idol of many, was never so effective. Reliance walloped that greal aggregation of ball-tossers, Gilt Edges, by the sccre of 8 to 5. It was a great zame, iull of spirit and fire; speaking collo- quially it was a rip-snorter. Lange, Ouk- land’s third baseman, accepte! a dozen chances withoutan error. Sacramenio has witnessed a number of fine games this season, but the cranks of thatcity say the one last Sunday was the greatest of the lot. It was witnessed by a shouting, howling, loud articulating, wild accentu- ating crowd of 2500 people. Now when Reliance crosses bats with Stockton there will be fun, work and ex- citement. BStockton bas a strong team, strong at the bat and in the field, and any team that beats it has got to get in and hustle like a pugilist trying to geta square deal {rom Sharkey in the roped arena. Harper will be in the box for the Slough City nine. Harper and Van Haltren arrayed against each other! Where has the public had a chance to witness such great pitching! Not since the aisbanding of ibe old California League, But the game Sunday won’t be entirely a pricher’s battle. Scattered throughout the nine innings there promises 10 be some na-v( stickwork. The pyrotechnic display will be as great as tne fireworks on the evening of July Fourth, where $5000 has been appropriated and the commitiee finds a shortage of $3000. The Stock- tonians are coming down attired in their batting clothes, and they expect to com- mence the cannonading early in the engagement. Then, too, the Reliances will cross the bay with their batting eyes athirst for Harper's curves, and the sphere may go cavorting about the grounds like a wild bronco on its native heath. And then, 100, there will be fielding. What patron of the national game doesn’t ke to see good fielding? The public is no doubt ayprised of the fact that a live bail us d by live players acquainted with the live game permiis of live fieiding. How diiferent it is when the game is played with a dead ball, as it is at Central Park! It then partakes of a funeral pro- cession without the hearse. There isan incentive besides the plaudits ol the multitude for the men to play great bali at Recreation Park Sunday per cent of the receipts of each game are set aside and at tne conclusion Stockton. -Billings Harper ina - .Smith M. He Was on Trial in Judge Dunne’s Court on a Charge | of Grand Larceny. Oase Dismissed, Unknown to the Police, Because He Was Said to Be Dead. The police are trving hard to solve the problem as to whether Bernard Meyers, a jeweler, arrested for grand larceny, is dead or alive. The court records say that he is dead, but there are people who be- lieve that he is still in the land of the liv- ing. If heis dead the peculiar thing is that 10 one seems exactly to know just where he died. Tnree vplaces have been men- tioued—Yuma, Ariz., Suisun and the Ger- man Hospital in this City. He did not die in the German Hospital, and inquiries will be made by the police at Suisun and Yuma. Meyers was arrested on March 15 on the complaint of Mrs. Laura Locks, Turk street. She answered an advertisement that asked for a loan of $400 upon articles of jewelry. Meyers called upon her, and showed her a gold watch and chain and a | pair of diamond earrings valued at about | $700 as security. She advanced the money, but while getting it Meyers had substi- tuted a pair of earrings with glass stones for the diamond ones. Hence his arrest He was held to answer by Judge Low on March 29, his bonds being fixed at $2000. He remained in the County Jail till May 1. when he was arraicned in Judge Dunne’s court and pleaded not guilty. His bonds were reduced to $1000, and as ! his health was not good friends became his sureties and he was released. It was given out that he had been sentto Ari- | zona for his health, and the case was con- tinued from time to time. Wednesday Mrs. Locks and tha a: - ing officers, Detectives Ryan and O’Dea, went to tue District Attorney’s office to inguire what disposition had been made of the case, as Mrs. Locks wanted to get possession of the jewelry now in the hands of the property clerk. The records were examined and the information was given out that the case was dismissed on September 18 for the reason that thedefendant wasdead. This was a genuine surprise to the detectives and Mrs. Locks. Assistant District Attorney Hinkle made the motion for the dismissal of tue case. He could not be seen yesterday, but the police say he does not remember from whom he got the information that Meyers was dead. Attorney Mack, who was engaged to defend Meyers, was not in the cily when the case was dismissed, and he does not know whether Meyers 1s dead or not. Neither the police nor Mrs, Locks will cease their investigations till the question is definitely settled. Meantime they are wondering why they were not notified that the case had been dismissed. LOOTED VACANT EOUSES. Lewis Richardson, a Burglar, Has a Fancy for Electrical Fittings. Lewis Richardson, alias Lewis Gerenan, was arrested yesterday by Detectives Rey- nolds and Dinan and will be booked on charges of burglary. | | charter election. | Everett ana George Aspden was selected | journed. all the electrical apparatus, including pelis, batteries, burners and globes. In two or three instances he even took the burglar alarm. He soid the articles to second-hand dealers. The moncy was used in buying morphine for himse!f and | wife.
