The first thing I noticed was how graceiu.ly they carrisd themseives, how e e. gantly m’{. dresscu and how hesithy they looked. I have visited mostof the countries of the world, but nowhere huve I seen so many fair ladies as right here in San Frau- cisco.” Mr. Hellemsns has left for a trip through Southern California, and will then return home, <10ppiug & lew weeks at Chicago snd New York. JOE GODDARD ON HIS WAY The Barrier Champion Com- ing Out to Meet Faker Tom Sharkey. He May Ignore the Sailor When Apprised of the Feeling Here. Green and Ziecler to Fight Under the Auspices of the National Club. George Green and Owen Ziegler will meet in the roped arena under the au- spices of the National Club either on Fri- day evening, November 12, or on Monday evening, November 15. The men will re- ceive 60 per cent of the gross receipts if one of them is declared the winner, and if the decision be a draw they will receive only 30 per cent. s Tne club managers believe that by ex- acting these stipulations from the puzilists the public will see a better physical cul- turecontesithan under the old conditions, where no provisions for a reductior of the pursein case of adraw were made. There have been too many draws in the battles pulled oft in this ciy since the revival of nugilism, and the stana taken by the National Club will tend to remedy this. Green and Ziegler met once before in this city. It was on May1 1896. The fight was for ten rounds. I: took place in the Mechanics’ Pavilion under the man- agement of the Olymupic Club. Aif King, the referee, awarded the battie to Green. The purse was for $1500, $1200 to the win- ner and $300 to the loser. Green was much the neavier, but Ziegler put up a sturdy battle and was fighting s'rong when the mill ended. Ziegler will enter the ring next month several pounds hesvier than wben he fougnt Green te- fore. Z:ke Abranams of the Knickerbocker Ciub received a dispatch from Jue God- dard in New York last night stating that he would !eave that city last night for San Francisco and arrive here Wednesday. Goddard comes out to fight Sharkey in November. The Knickerbocker Club sent him $500 1o defray nis expenses. It 1s probable that when Goddard arrives bere and i~ spprised of Sharkey's great unpopularity be will refuse to fight the tlor, 1aking on Joe¢ Choynski, which would be a -reat drawing card, the public knowing that the mill would De on the square. In an interyiew published in THE CALL Friday and which was bad with Godaard in Boston the barrier champion stated that he wouid need no training to fight Sharkey. Subsequently in an interview Sharkey deciarea that he would need no training to fight Goddard. The identical statement reearding condition coming from the two men is significant aud many are asking if the thing has already been fixed to have the baitle declared a draw and the pur-e diviaed. Sharkey’s course in bis battle with Kitz- simmons, like Banquo’s ghost, will not down, and the public is jusiified in ques- tioning the genuinenes- of any maich in which he figures as one of the p incipal: in fact, fizures in at alil. After Sharkey’s performance with Fitz- simmons Pol ce Commissioner Gunst de- c.ared that he woutll see that the sailor never fought in San Francisco again to zull the public. Commissioner Gunst has just returned from Europe, and on being questioned on the subj-ct refusea to state whetbher he would stop the fight. Com- missioner Guns: and Abrabams are friends and it was stated last night that he will dissuade Abranams from puliing the fight off. Lavigne and Walcott are training hard for what promises to be one of the preat. est, if not the greatest battle, evar fought in San Francisco. Laviene is out to the Six-Mile House, and is being locked after by his brother, Billy. Walcott is at Johuny Croll’s, in Alameda, under the watchful eve of Tom O'Rourke. Dixon, the feather-weight champion, and “*Scaldy” B:ll Quinn are working on him. Walcott, with the exception of Fitzsim- mous, is about the only man in the cous try who can fight successfully in two classes. He can enter the ringasalight or welter-weight. Walcott is under con- tract to weigh in at 6 o’clock on the day of the fieht at 136 pounds. When he fought Green he was much heavier. La- vigne is a light-weight. He contemplates not training down too fine, so that he can succe~sfully resist Wolcott's rusnes. The battle takes place on the evening of October 29 at the Mechanics’ Pavi ion. It will be under the auspices of the Occi. dental Ciub. Seat- wiil piobably be sold at §7 50, $5, $3 and §2 MoCORMICK's TRIBULATION, e Put $310 in a Scrapbox and a Scav- enger Got It. James W. McCormick, shirt manufac- turer, 52 Sixth street, is mourning the loss of $310. Friday night he placed the money in a scrapbox for safety, and yes- terday morning waoen the scavengercalled the office-boy told him to throw away the serapbox. McCormick arrived an hour later and was norritied to find that the scavenger had 1aken the scrapbox away.
