John Daggeti and Forty Em- ployes Reluotantly Walk Out. Discontinuance of Silver Coinage 8aid to Be the Cause of the Redaction. Jonn: ' Daggett, the Superintendent of the United States Mint in this City, turned over the management of the Mint 10 his suceessor, Frank Leach, yesterday afternoon. The Mint -has been closed during the month of July in con:equénce of the an- nusl settiement. - This, together with the fact ihata change in the office of ‘super- intendent was. this year. ad.ied to the weual clean-up, made the work more particular, as the money n the vaults had 10 be cuunted before a fransfer could be had. With the departure of Mr. Daggett other good and faithful Democrats: must turn their faces to the cold and chilly Kion- dyke region, where .cold ‘feet takes the place of warm ruis in-a Federal office. Forty ‘of the emvloyes took their final leave of the grav. building on Fifth street yesterday aiterncon. The reason given for the discharge of this pumber at this time was stated to bethe discontinua- tion of the coinage of silver. . At all events, the fiat came from the Treasury Department in Washington, D. C. 1n speaking af the reduction of hands at the Mint, Mr. Leach gave his reasons as follows: The fact is that the coinage of silver in this City has wholly ceased siuce the beginning of this week. Superintendent Daggeit early this week received orders from W ashingion to discontinue the coinage of siver and re duce the force. B Lust August there remained in this Mint $11,000,000 in silver builion purchased under the silver purchase act. Tne authorities con- cluded to have this coined into silver doliars, and order= were sent hither from Washington to that effect. This mace necessary the eme ployment of some forty exira workers, Since then the monthly coinage of siiver dollars hag averaged here between 700,000 and $800,000. The supply o1 buiion siiver is now virtually exhausted, and the departntent deems it uu- wise to coutinue the force on the rolls. Of the thirty-two people removed, they will remain on the rolis under the civil service 1aws for ayear, during which me they will be eligible to reinstatement. It is not obiigatory, however, on the Surerintendent to restore these people to office. He lias ihree sources from which to select employes—the eligible lis: just referred to, the civil seivice iis), or he may make a preference ot resioring Lo office v.d soldiers, who can be given place at any time. The order to discont.nue the coinage of silver wus peremptory. To-morrow the Mint will reopen for business, after having been ciosed for six weeks, g ————————— . Mrs. Edwards Denies.
