THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY, JULY 26, 1897 NOTES FOR THE NATIONAL GUARD A Camp at Which There Was Plenty of Work for the Soldiers. Some Talk About- Raising the Standard of the Guard of the State, An Energetic Officer Has Resigned. The Camp of the Signal Corps. Third Brigade. Camp Shafter at Santa Cruz is a thing of the past, but it will live in the memory of the members of the Fiith Regiment, Second Brigade, of the National Guard, as one at Which there was plenty of work and but little of the social feature which marked the camps of previous rears. During the week the camp wes visited by Brigadier-General Wurfield, commanding the | Second Brigade, who was accompanied by Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph G. Geisting, as- sistant adjutant-general of the brigade, and several members of the brigadier-general’s | staff. They remained the better partof two | days and made a close inspection of the camp | and the manner fn which it was conducted. | The assistant adjutant spesking of the camp, said that it ted more in accordance with the methods of a United States army camp than any that has been known in this State for a long time. There was a good deal in the military instructions that were im- parted that will prove of value to the men and | | those who sre in command of them, and en- | able them in the future.to make better sol- diers. The assistant adjutant-general, speaking of the guard generally and{the Second Brigade in particular, said thatit is the desire of those in authority to bring the guard of California up to a standsrd that ill command the Tespect of every one who il look upon the soldiers whenever they turn out or when they are engaged in military work in the armory. Itis the aim of the commander of the Lecor Brigade 10 place his command in such a con- dition that it will merit the commendation of the citizens and to make the citizens feel that there is organized for their protection a body of men that will serve them if ever called into action. The brigadier-general, who some time since said of his command, *much has been do but more is expected,” bas a 200d opportu to advance his brigade, a will win the admiration ty if he will do so he na respect of all who are forced to pay for the muinienance of the guard. Action on the part of the suverior | officers, uot spasmodic but continuous, that will animate toe subordinate officers xnd the men, one toat will arouse a spirit of rivairy in | the several o ations and make each try to excel the other wi.l do much 1o accomplish | the end sought. “amp Shaiter was also_visited last week by r-General Nat T. James, division com- mander, accompanied by Colouel H. P. Bush, assistant adjutant-general of the division, and several meimbers of his siaff; and Colonel James F. Smith of the First Regiment, Second Brigade, also went to the csmp to see if he coula discover anyihing there that could be of service 1o him when the regiment he com- mends goes into camp near Ukiahin the la ter part of August. The men of the Fifth were promised Buzze- cotovens, such as are used in the regular army in ths preparation of rations for each company, but the ovens came not and the wen were forced to make other arrangements, which, it is claimed, gave satisiaction. Sucn au oven was used by 1roop A on Iis practice march through Sonoms County recently, and | it is stated that it proved a great success. 1t s expected that a supply of the ovens will reach this City in time to be delivered to the companie: of the First Regiment when it gets ¥ 10 g0 into camp. several companies of the guard are ng the distribution of the new Spring- field rifles which have been promised for some time, but the Weapons are a long time reach- ing tiere. The men are to be supplied with Webb cartridge belts, cantee and then when they get their new uniforms they will be in & pretty good condition. If there is any surplus after the payment for the unifor.as, the money wiil be used, as far as it | will go, to provide overcoats where they are most needed. George Lipman, second lieutenant of the Ca- det Corps (Lowell High School) has tendered s resignation. First lieutenant Price, Troop A, N. G. C., has resigned, much to the regret of Lhe troopers of | the company. He has accepled & position in | his brother’s banking-house, New York City, the terms offered being such that be could not in justice to himself decline the offer. As an officer of the National Guard he wes active and efficient, and he coutributed in & great degree to the equipment, discipline and efliciency of the troop. In his retirement the troop loses & valuable officer, and Captain Jenks, the com- mander, an able assistant. Mr. Price was also well known as a news- paper man, and in that capacity he displaye. much enterprise and ability. puring his res dence fn this City he made & host of friends, who, while they regret that he leeves them, rejoice 1n his sdvancement. The cavalry branch of the National Guard has adopted the recent changes that have been promuigated in bugle calls. The principal changes in the drill signals are: *‘Fours Fours left,” “Guide right”” and “Guide ,"and in the service calls the “church call” has been changed Third Brigade Signal Corps. Camp Douglass, in Summit Valley, near Donner, is now an established fact, for the members of the signal corps of the Third Brigade have pitched six tents and established military rule. The corps left Sacramento on Fridey night and reached Soda Springs sta- tion at & quarter after 6 o’clock the following morning, and were met there by the sdvance guard. At 10 o’clock the men were called *to horse,” and took & praciice march to the Sum- | mit, s distance of threc miles. Colonel Rob- ertL. Peeler, assistant adjuiant-general of the State of California, and Major Douglass, signal officer of the Third Brigade, were expected the tollowing day. The members of the corps are equippea for work, and they intend to make the most of the iime that they shall re- main in camp. WATKINS, HOTEL ARRIVALS. COSMOPOLITAN HOTEL.
