— e THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, THURSDAY, JULY 8, 1897. THOBULLETS | AND 10 GANE Ex -Supervisor McDonald Runs the Gauntlet of a Pistol. A Bystander the Only One Hurt in the Impromptu Duel. 0ld Feud Breaks Out in a Manner | That Excites Many Spectators on Montgomery Street. Ex-Suvervicor D. A. McDonald was shot attw ce yesterday at the cornerof Pineand | Montgomery streets by an ex-officer of the | Federal army of the same name. Captain Duncan F. McDonald, the assailant, was lodged at tha California-street station on a charge of attemut to murder. aptain McDonald’s ballets flew wild. Neither of them hit the mark, but one of them grazed tie leg of o bystand:r, Isaac Knell, inflicting « slight wound. His | wound was at the Receiving | Hospital and pronounced not dangerous The ex-Supervisor was crossing Mont- gomery s'reet when the ex-Federal officer met him. There was a mutual interchange | dressed ?N\\“ RN SN N\ except it be the contractor who has ihe job. The machinery is on the ground ready to do its work as soon as it 1s put in operation, but for some reason or other tuis most important prereguisite is rot put into operation. And asa consequence the “hog’s-back’” stiil remains in its natu- ral condition, much to the detriment of he merchants of Polk street, who have looked to the opening of this sireet at the very earliest possible date. Polk street, which is th2 dividing line between the old section and that of the Western Addition, has made great progress during the past fiiteen years, but there is still in some districts a disinclina- tion 1o Keep vace with the more progress- | ive element. On Sacramento street, petween Larkin and Hyde, the property-owners are trying 1o get the wooden sidewalks on the south side of Sacramento street, about wiere it joins Larkin, converted to a stone walk, the same as has been laid all along Sacra- mento street, from Hyde ont over the Gough-street hill. The Supervisors have been petitioned to more than once, but so far all efforts to make the unsightly streich conform to the remainder of the street have been futile. There is another movement underway to have the obj tionable stretch removed. R THE NEW ATHL&TIC OLUB. The California Amateur Postponed Its Meeting Until Friday. A meeting of the California Amateur Athle:ic Association was to have been kela last evening at the Olympic Ciub, but Director Taylor postponed action un- tii Friday evening, as ‘‘Judge” W. P, Lawlor, who is one of the prime movers of the scheme, was engaged in other and more important business last evening and could not atiend. Mr. Taylor is in pes that ali of the amateur clubs which are interested in Pacitic Coast athieti will send representatives to the mee on Fridsy evening. Superintendent Kennedy reporied that all of the boxers who are booked to ap vear in the tournament which will be heid in the gymnasiom of the club on the evening of the 20th inst., are rounding into good shape, and will be in superb ing D. A. MACDONALD. f ithets. Captain McDonald, the as- | charged the ex-Supervisor wi'h him of a portion of the estate o 2 Captain Mc an of somewhat he ded it was at he left a fortune of $100,000. money was made by showing Indian corpsand the habitsof the original A an<. His heirs, according to the | B n word that went round, were the sisters a brothers, Duncan F. McDonaid, Da- McDonald, F. McDonald. Ellen de- nd Rosa Williams., John F. Mc- nald applied for letters of administra- n of the estate. Beiore they were granted a surprise was sprung upon the heirs e filing of a petition of alad in hi calling himself Henry Mec- Donald, who ciaimed the entire estate. | A bitte vsuit ensued. The boy was | proved by tbe courts to be the son of Emma Grego tier known to the com- munity as Clau se. The mother sup- ported her sonin the fight in the courts, declaring that she had been Captain Me- Donald’s misiress, and that the young | litigant was tie issus of their illegal | iion. The heirs resisted the ciaim. In | he end the child was victorious, and a | bitter feud grew ou of that decision. | The man who did the shooting yester- | day commenced action against the | estate to recover half of the real property, | | | i | l an which he declared due b asthe assets of the partuership existing between him- self and his b-otner. There was a com- vromi:e in whica all the heirs assented. D. A. McDonald, though not one of the family, acted us Duncan F. McDonald's assignee. It was over this action that yesierday’s shooting occurred. Capt McDonald was taken to the | California-sireew station and was charged wiih at »t 40 murder. He was not | nxious to ta'k of his exploit. He claimed that when the estate of Charles McDon ald apportioned he was sick with rheumatism, and that be delivered an order to the ex-Supervisor for the money due him accoraing to the court’s decision, He sull cia that the ex-Supervisor owes him the amount of that order, about $3500. | The friends of D. A. McDona'd say that the assaiiant has been laboring under an halluecination for many months past. THE HOGS-BACK THERE Polk-Street Improvement Has Taken a Temporary Recess. A Wooden Sidewalk That Is a Nuisance and a Danger to Pedestrians. Polk street, the pioneer of electric il- lumination by private subscription of the | mercuants has assumed a- somewhat sub- | dued tone of iate as compared with 1ts early energy. The cause of this is not so much the fault of the storekeepers as it is of the contractors to whom the cutting of tue bill has been let. It was the inien- tion of the merchants to have the hill cut throngh as quickly as possible. With this | object in view the contract was let without | delay, and an understanding was upper- most in the minds ol the property-owners tnal before meny months Polk street | woula be one continous thoroughfare from Market street to tne waters of the bay. These good intentions, however, bave bren somewhat frustrated by what seemys 0 be the fault of no person in particwlar | | Golden Ga | TLEMEN: condition to fight tle battles of their lives A meeting of the directors will bs held on Tuesday evening next. WASHINGTON'S STATOE, The Owner Wishes the City to| Accept the Relic and Erect It. It Is the Supervisors’ Fault That It Was Not Suitably Placed Long Ago. Apropos of the article which appeared in last Sunday’s CaLL concerning an old statne of George Washington, which at one time stood in Woodward’s Gardens, but is now lying abandoned in the back vard of a Mission-street residence, the fol- lowing communication was yesteriay re- ceived at the office of Tue CaLr: AN FrANCISCO, Cal., July 6, 1897. City Editor San Francisco Cal—DEAR SIk: 1 bave noticed in last Sunday’s, as well as to- das’s issue of THE CALL, 2n article about the abandonment of the statue of George Wash- ingion. I would say in that respect that that part is not entirely correct. 1 am ihe owner 01 the statue, and on Apri. 17, 1893, addressed & communication (of which ibe .uciosed is & copy) to the Board vf Supervi ors of 1his City nd County, offering to donate and er:ct the statue in Washington squarc or any other place which tbey would cesiguate, iree of charge to the City. TheSupervisorsat that timeana for some time | after did 10t act in the matter, and I then de- cided to erect the statue on “Liberty Heights,” | etherwise known as Battle Mouniain, when- r the sireeis in that vicinity should be graded. The sircets have not been graded as yei, owing to the differsnt Boards of Super- | visors not having the backbone to carry out the 1817 OWiNg 10 SOTIE CONLTOVErsy noucerning the rades which exist in that part of the Crty. 1 Lave always had a watchman look-after the statue since I bovght it. Your suggestion of placing the statue in a public park 1s a very good one, and I ain will- i'gto donate the stntue for that purpose, and I wili forihermore sgree to remove 1t froin 1ts presentsite to any poace thal may be desig- ntied (o have it erected. 1 would propose that your esteomed paper take up & public subserip- Uion heated by the balance of the Fourth of | suty appropriation, if there is any left, as a slarter for the means of erecting & sui.able foundation. T would also suggest that an ap- to the different quariy and builu- toue men of the Siate 1o contrivute suffi- ient sione from each quarry tocomplete the pedesial. I will agree to collect all such mu- teriai that may be delivered to this City and deliver the same to the site whica wili have been selected, It 1were in the same financial position at the present time as [ was when I offered the statue 10 the City, I would have long since made & pplication " 1o the Park Commis- slouers 10r permission to erect tne statue in Purk free of charge to any one. At the present time I am not in & position to do as 1 should have liked, and I can only cffer to doas 1 have already said—to donate and move the statue to the place which may be selected for ii, ana coileot all material which may be donated in the City and aeliver same 1o ineseiected site wholly free of &ny Cost Lo Any Ore. Any further {nformation de- sired will be giadly given, yours, peel be mud, i Most respectiuily ’ JOSEPH SCHEERER, 23 Tenth street, San Francisco. Following is a copy of the letter sent to the Board of Supervisors: SAN FRANCISCO, Cal, April 17, 1803, To the Honorcbic soard of Su']\mrrim,ra——?;;i" Haviug purchused the well-known siatue of Washingion, which for many years gruced the entrance of Woodwara's Garaens, 1 Tespect{ully prescut it through you 10 the peo- pieof San Francisco and request that 1t be placed on s proper pedestai in Washington | square or in any other appropriate place ta be seiected by vour honorible Board of Super- visors. I will build & pedestal and place it, frce of ckarge, iuabove square to the entire satisfaction of your honorable board or any one you may select 10 act for you. The door opened with surprising alacrity and a young woman with a very large hat stepped out into the moonlignt. In her hand she held a small leather-covered box. “Here they are,” she said, cheerfully. “What?” asked the highwayman, “My diamonds,” said the lady. I am an aciress, you know, and—" highwayman leaped upon his horse. “Madam,” he said, removing his hat gracefuily, “you must excuse me. I may be a highwayman, but [ am not an adver- tisement.”’—Boston Budget. ————————— Each German army corps is to be equipped with a portable crematory.
