The Game Somewhat Marred by the Unprofessional Decision of the Umpire. The Banta Claras were defeated at Cen- tral Park yesterday afternoon by a scrub nine picked up around the City. game was to have been between the Santa Claras and Santa Rosas, but as the latter failed to appear the management did their “best to provide substitutes. The game was a good one from start to finish, although somewhat marred by the umpire, whose decisions were very poor. He might have known a good bit about some things, but was hopelessly ignorant regarding baseball hooted and j:ered spectators. Following is the score: SANTA CLARAS. A.B. R. BH 6.B. P.O. J. Lenox is now en route to Sioux Citr, lowa, where & long sentence inevitably awaits him. This consigns 10 the peni: tentiary the last active member of one of the boldest and most successful gangs cf bank swindlers that ever infested the United States. The news will interest : Becker and Creedon, who are under.life se ntence, but who are now in the County Jail awaiting the result of an zppeal to’ the Supreme Court. Lenox with the rest of the gang made quite a haul from ~everal California banks turee years ugo, and got away, but they were not so successful afterward. The gang then consisted of Becker and Cree- don, Lenox, Robert Bowman, Old Joe English and *“Lon” Thayer, and they got East safely with their plunder. Their method was always to get a genuine draft for » few dollars, cieverly raise it to $1500 or $2000, and pui on the back a counter- feit indorsement by the casaier, identify- ing the owner. One of the ‘“‘presentors” . dia the rest, and Lenox was one of them. He is 65 years of age, tall, robust and a piausible talker, with an honast, straight- forward countenance. He always made up as a well-to-do rancher, and was gene erally a breeder of horses. He was well calculatea for success at his business. After the gang leit thls_State they started another raid from Jacksonville, Fla., and successiully swindled a large number of banks ail over the South. The first snaz was struck at Des Moines, Iowa, when “Old Joe” Knglish was arrested. The rest of the gang continued operatiors through the Northwest. About this t. me the American Bankers' Association was formed. The Pinkertons were retain d as pelice agents of the association, and the relentless pursuit which has now caught - Lenox again was begun. « £ In the summer o! 1394 Lenox was found at Atiantic City, N. J., and taken back to . Milwaukee, where the gang had éperated. - While tne case was pending his lawyer. - became District Atiorney. Lenox was positively identified as the man who had swindied two banks there, but through efforis at compromise, etc., he got off with two years in uie Workhouse, At that time he was wanted for a swindle on* the Corn Exchange Bank at Sioux City, lowa, and requisitions were ready for him when bis seutence expired, a little .ess than a month ago. He was nabbed for the Sioux City swindle, but was held by a writ of habeas ~ corpus and then discusrged through a flaw in tue indictment. He escaped before he could be retaken by legal process, and has eluded pursuit until now. The American Bankers' Association is pursu- ing him relentlessly, and there avpears to be no escape !or him at Sioux City. After the arrest of Eaglish and Lenox, - Becker and Creedon reorganized their gang and returned to California, where they bad been -0 successfu! two years bas- * fore. Arter coming here they bought the draft on the Crocker-Woolworth Bank for $12, in favor of A. H. Dean: from the Bank of Wood anu, raisea 1t with remark- able cleverness to $22,(0J) and succeeded’ in cashing it at ine Nevada Bank. ' Through theclever work of Captain Lees the 1identity of the swindlers was dis. - covered, while their arrest in the East was - due to the Pinkertons. Becker and Creedon are now facing life sen.ences, as stated. A. Dean 1s in the City Prison, beid as a witneass pending the appeal. “O d Joe'” English is serving an eieven-year sentence in Iowa and is demented through paresis. Lon Thayer isdying of con~umption in New York and Bowman is in England. Dan Beunecky, who operated with them at oue time, is in prison at Albany, N. Y. James Farrell and Samuel Harr:s, also of the gang, ure serving time in Texas. They traveled a long road, but they have had their day. L:nox was convicted of lorgery in Iilis nols in 1877 and sentenced to seven years. For the same crimes he was afterward conviciea in Kansas und in Pennsylvania, Then he joined the Becker-Creedon gang nm:d‘is now getting soiae more of his ree wa
