In the thirty-six-foot class the Queen | and the Harpoon were the only boats to start. ! Of the large boats entered the Clara, Elia, Pride and the Speedwell started over the course in one of the preitiest races of | the day. | The Elia lost some time at the start on account of a tramp yacht running across On the last turn around the Presidio the yachts were close up. The peedwell was the first to turn, followed by the Elia ana the Clara, with the Pride in the van. Ou the homeward journey, the yachts | made a_beautiful abnearance as they ran | before the wind. Besides her working | sails, the Speecwell broke out her balloon | jib. The distance of the course over which the large yachts traveled was fourteen ard a hall miles. The 25-foot boats traveled a little over ten miles, while the smaller | class sailed five miles. | What nearly proved a serious accident | occurred after the race. The Clara at- tempted to pick up a stakeboat and in | doing so left one ot her crew in the boat | to take up the anchor. When the Clara | came about again the young man tossed | the pain er to tho-e on board, but as the | yacht swung around the mainsail fouled the stick that held the club fiags and the boat was capsized. The mariner was thrown into the water, but managed io erasp the painter with'which he pulled himself oni deck. - The heavy anchor pre- vented the boat from righting itself, so the Clara had to tow it into shailow water.
